Much of Star Wars: The Force Awakens success can be traced back to director J.J. Abrams using his mystery box formula to increase the anticipation of the sequel. Throughout that film’s marketing campaign, fans were treated to teasers that didn’t reveal much and some photos that didn’t provide any details. This only heightened the anticipation as fans wanted to know more, studying very single frame of the teaser to find any hints of anything resembling a spoiler. Now, with characters already being established and Rian Johnson at the helm for the currently untitled Episode VIII, we can probably expect something a little different when it comes who what is being shared.
Johnson is already halfway through the production of Star Wars: Episode VIII, and with a couple more weeks left, the filmmaker has been having some fun sharing some production photos. Of course, they are nothing too spoilerly. Check out two set photos here below.
The director revealed these photos on his Tumblr page. He kicked all of this off by sharing a photo of Maz Kanta earlier this month. He also announced that production has reached the halfway point.
The first image sees a crew member clean a window of an X-Wing while an actor looks directly into the camera as he sits in the cockpit. It’s not clear who the actor is, but it sure doesn’t look like Oscar Isaac. The face is so grainy I could be wrong, but my money is on it not beging Isaac. Other than that, it doesn’t really tell us much other than that the starfighter will be making yet another appearance in the film.
In the second photo, we see another crew member give a First Order console a scrub down. The First Order operative has his back turned towards the viewer so there is no telling who will be punching in those commands. While it could be anyone, there were a number of cameos made on both sides in The Force Awakens, so let’s not assume that it is just an extra.
Again, these photos don’t tell us much of anything in regards to plot details about Episode VIII. But it does satisfy fans’ interest in the upcoming film. Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to release an official plot synopsis.
Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017. Hopefully, something will be “teased” at Star Wars Celebration since Disney is unlikely to show anything at SDCC this year.
