Rumor: 40% Of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Will Be Reshot

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Reshoots are just a common part of the big budget filmmaking process so when word got around that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would be going in for some reshoots, there was no reason to be worried. But as we started to learn more about the kind of troubles that plagued the film, it started to look like there needed to be some concern. According to those reports, Disney was unhappy with the first cut of the film and felt that it tonally off with what a “classic” Star Wars movie should feel like. A source said that it was the closest thing to a prequel that we will ever get, but that it was too much like a war movie.

Now it appears that these reshoots are becoming a serious issue as they are now bringing in Christopher McQuarrie to get involved in the production of the film. McQuarrie had previously done a couple of rewrites to fix some of the issues. More on the story below.

We should take all things with a huge grain of salt. Again, reshoots are very common in the industry, but Making Star Wars says that the film will reshoot about 40% of the film with 32 sets being recreated for these reshoots. The cast and crew will be working for six days a week for the next eight weeks.

The site adds that McQuarrie’s draft was superior to the film they shot previously. He will also be working extensively with director Gareth Edwards onset to make sure they’re on the “same page” with the most recent draft of the film. However, the Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol writer/director denies any such thing, and took to Twitter to debunk the rumor:

If anyone is speaking the truth it’s probably McQuarrie. So maybe there’s little to no truth to these rumors. We’ll just have to wait and see. The film doesn’t come out until December and reshoots are always a part of the plan for any film of this size. It’s just that there is an alarming percentage of what needs to be reshot – again if there is any truth to that number.

Rogue One had been pitched as a war film from the very beginning, and it seems strange to hear that they are having issues with the tone even if that’s what Edwards and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy have been telling us since the film was announced.

A Disney representative released this statement to explain the situation when the story first broke:

“The filmmaking team and the studio always anticipated additional shooting and second unit work to make the film the absolute best it can be, and the actors were aware there would be additional shooting. Coming off “˜The Force Awakens,’ there’s an incredibly high bar for this movie and we have a responsibility to the franchise and to the fans to deliver the best possible movie we can.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will arrive in theaters on December 16th, 2016.
