Just as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has ended principal photography at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, GA, Jon Watts (Cop Car) is starting to lens for Spider-Man: Homecoming. In the past few weeks the film has added an eclectic mix of actors and comedians. Logan Marshall-Green, Martin Starr, and Donald Glover were the latest to join Tom Holland as the titular hero, Robert Downey Jr. returning as Iron Man, Zendaya as a female lead, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Michael Keaton as an unnamed villain, and Tony Revolori as a rival student.
And now, you can add four more to that already promising cast. Hannibal Buress is the latest name to join the cast, along with Isabella Amara (The Boss), J.J. Totah (Other People), and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (The Land). More on the story below.
Per the norm, Marvel and Sony are being tight-lipped about the new characters and plot of the film, but we can pretty much gather that it won’t be another origins film considering that Spidey made his long overdue entrance to the MCU in Captain America: Civil War. Based on looks alone they could be playing any characters from the Spidey mythos or even be new characters created for the film. So we will just leave the speculation for another time.
Variety exclusively broke the news on Buress casting. He is a standout comedian having starred recently in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. He is lending his vocal talents to voice a role in The Secret Life of Pets, which hits later this summer. He also has a role in Baywatch, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron.
THR reported on the additions of the three young actors, and given the age and look of them it is likely that they will be playing Peter Parker’s high school friends or classroom rival. Although Isabella Amara had already starred in a handful of films, she played a younger Melissa McCarthy in The Boss. She can next be seen in Wilson, starring alongside Woody Harrelson and Judy Greer, The Worst Years of My Life with Lauren Graham and Rob Riggle, and The Tale with Elizabeth Debicki and Laura Dern.
As for Lendeborg Jr., the young actor is best known for playing Cisco in the Sundance film The Land.
We should all be used to this game of silence being played, especially now that Sony is now officially sharing Spidey with Marvel, a studio known to keep things from us until the time is right. But giving the overwhelmingly positive reception Holland and Tomei got for playing Spidey and Aunt May in Captain America: Civil War, it would be nice to get some hints as to who these new characters are playing.
Hopefully, we will know more as shooting has commenced. Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
