BAADASSSSS!   |

Mystery Science Theater 3000 MST3K

Last November, Shout! Factory, which owns the rights to the cult classic comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, teamed up with the show’s creator and first host Joel Hodgson to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund a reboot of MST3K. Their target fundraising goal was set at $2 million, but the campaign ultimately became the highest-funded film and TV crowdfunding effort in history by raising a grand total of $5.7 million, allowing them to fund the production of 14 new episodes with an all-star squadron of geek icons and comedy geniuses working in front of and behind the camera.

On Saturday at a panel for the MST3K revival at San Diego Comic-Con, the announcement was made that the new show will be coming exclusively to Netflix as part of a $5 billion investment from the film and television streaming giant in original programming, which also includes their Marvel Studios series and the recent Stranger Things.

The news was confirmed via Netflix’s Twitter feed:

The MST3K reboot will be hosted by comedian and Nerdist podcast co-host Jonah Ray in the role of the latest human experiment to be subjected to an endless array of the worst movies ever made by mad scientists while trapped on the Satellite of Love. Providing the voices of Ray’s new robot companions will be comedians Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn, while Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy will return to play Hodgson’s original Bots Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, respectively. The new “Mads” will be played by Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog) as Kinga Forrester, daughter of Trace Beaulieu‘s original MST3K villain Dr. Clayton Forrester, and Patton Oswalt as TV’s Son of TV’s Frank (guess whose offspring he happens to be).

Hodgson is on board the revival as an executive producer and will be involved in every area of the production, including the writing of each episode. Dan Harmon and Joel McHale, the creator and star of Community respectively, are attached as writers and will be working under head writer Elliott Kalan, the former Emmy-winning head writer of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Hodgson has also hinted that many famous fans of the show, including comedians and celebrities, could come on to make cameos or contribute to the writing of select episodes if the Kickstarter campaign met or surpassed its crowdfunding goal.

We can look forward to the Netflix premiere of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival in “the not-too-distant future,” whenever that may be.
