BAADASSSSS!   |

After over a year of steadily-building pre-release hype that had even beings living on distant planets aware of its release, Suicide Squad – the latest potential blockbuster from Warner Bros.’ cinematic DC Universe headlined by some of their most notorious supervillains – is here. Early reviews have ranged from mixed at best to tear-inducing negative at worst and as a result, members of the film’s cast and crew, including writer/director David Ayer and co-star Cara Delevingne, have been put on the defensive during promotional interviews.

You can read our own eelyajekiM’s thoughts on Suicide Squad here.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the studio’s previous attempt at beating chief competitor Marvel at a game they used to own, was greeted upon its release with a similar critical reaction that set the Internet on fire and left the superhero team-up epic unable to break the crucial $1 billion mark that all major tentpole franchise properties must now reach in order to be considered a success. In the days between Suicide Squad‘s premiere and official theatrical release, the film’s exhausting and troubled production was documented in excruciating detail by the Hollywood Reporter.

Early in the year the film underwent an extensive, costly series of reshoots reportedly to give it a more lighthearted tone. According to the Hollywood Reporter article, director Ayer had to compromise his initial somber vision for the film after the studio test-screened both his cut and one that was created with input from a trailer-editing house and audiences responded more favorably to the latter cut. It appears that there was at least one scene shot for Suicide Squad that he wasn’t even behind the camera for, a surprise cameo from another DC superhero that was actually helmed by Zack Snyder, the director of the previous DC movies Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and the upcoming Justice League.

SPOILER WARNING AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET SEEN SUICIDE SQUAD!!!!!

Already serving on the film as an executive producer, Snyder called the shots on a scene that featured Squad member Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) being apprehended in flashback by the Flash (Ezra Miller). Ben Affleck had been locked in for an extended cameo presence as Batman from the moment Suicide Squad went into production, but it wasn’t until recently that the Flash’s brief but noteworthy part, as well as Snyder’s direction of the scene, was revealed during a press day for the film in New York.

In an interview with Collider’s Steven Weintraub, Snyder divulged the details of his involvement with Suicide Squad. Apparently the scene was shot while filming on Justice League was already underway in order to take advantage of Miller being present on set and in full attire as the fastest man in the DC Universe:

“Flash was always in the movie, we just got lucky because Justice League was happening and they had the uniform, they had the assets, so we were able to get that photography.”

As he tells it, Snyder simply shot some footage of Miller in costume with a little dialogue and sent it over to the Suicide Squad production in Los Angeles to be edited into the final feature. Given the positive reception that greeted the recent unveiling of the first Justice League trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. is no doubt hoping some of the spirited fun promised by that tantalizing teaser rubs off on audiences checking out the Squad for the first time in the weeks to come.

Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters all over the country in 2D and 3D.
