The cast of Warner Bros.’ Ocean’s Eleven spinoff Ocean’s Eight is now starting to come together. Sandra Bullock has been on board the project since it was first announced back in October, with Cate Blanchett joining soon after.

Now Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, and Nora “Awkwafina” Lum are reportedly set to join the cast. Plus more on the film’s plot and where the heist could take place is being revealed. More on the story below.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the aforementioned names are all close to signing on for the film, which is set to be directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games). Hathaway, Carter, Kaling, and Rihanna are all recognizable names, but Awkwafina is fairly new to the industry, getting one of her first big breaks in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. While the sequel didn’t exactly meet expectations, she certainly was a scene stealer.

Deadline says the remaining spot on the roster could be opened up to a cameo by anyone involved in the previous Ocean’s Eleven films, which were all directed by Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh will also be working on this film, and it just so happens that he and Ross are close friends. Each has worked as second unit director on each others’ films. He will finish his own heist film, Logan Lucky, which is currently shooting in Atlanta, before heading over to work on Ocean’s Eight. Considering Soderbergh’s involvement in the movie, it opens up the possibility that Julia Roberts or even Catherine Zeta-Jones could fill that remaining roster spot.

Many are worried by the thought of an all-female cast leading a franchise reboot. Looking at what happened with Sony’s Ghostbusters, it’s easy to see why there may be some hesitation. But the project has been in development for years, with Warner Bros. President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman having conversations with the late Jerry Weintraub, who helped reboot the 2001 original starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, as well as its sequels Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007). It’s unlikely that Ocean’s Eight will suffer the same $70 million loss fate that the Ghostbusters reboot did, considering that the film wouldn’t need to rely heavily on special effects or CGI.

The script is written by Ross and Olivia Milch (Dude), and the film is scheduled to begin production in October in New York. We will keep you up to date on the progress of the film.
