It looks like Benicio Del Toro will be facing off against another infamous member of the galaxy.
After attempting to get another Infinity Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy and filming scenes for his mysterious villain role in Star Wars: Episode VIII, he will try to survive against an alien hunter in Shane Black‘s The Predator. More on the story below.
The Hollywood Reporter says the Academy Award-winning actor will be a part of an ensemble cast that will be anchored by his role. However, plot details remain under wraps. Apparently, the two parties have been dancing around the project for months, with Del Toro’s schedule being a major hurdle. Now that they have a lead actor, they can start casting the remaining pieces for a February 2017 start date.
Fred Dekker wrote the script. Black, who is directing the film, starred in the original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is heavily rumored to have been courted to reprise his role. We’ll have to assume that Benicio Del Toro will be leading a squad of soldiers who will have to try to defeat the Predator, or at least survive long enough to get away from him. It should be fun to see what Black and Dekker do with this film given how much fun Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys (both directed by Black), Lethal Weapon (written by Black), and The Monster Squad (written and directed by Dekker and co-written by Black) were.
If talks are successful, The Predator would be Del Toro’s third major franchise project of his career in recent years. The actor who has been known to star in dark and gritty films, has appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy and has a villain role in Star Wars: Episode VIII, a role that has yet to be revealed to the public. He is set to reprise his Sicario role as Alejandro Gillick in the sequel Soldado.
John Davis, Joel Silver, and Lawrence Gordon are producing. The Predator is currently scheduled to open in theaters on February 9, 2018.
