Now that the New York Comic-Con is in full swing, a lot of Power Ranger fans will have their eyes on the panel hoping for a glimpse of the new Rangers in action. The titular heroes will actually be based on the first American iteration, where five teenagers are selected to be super-powered protectors of Angel Grove. Of course, things will change, and based on the new trailer that was shown earlier this morning, these Teenagers have to attend Saturday school, which will bring them together to fight an evil force known as Rita Replusa.

Check out the full trailer here below.

If this is a teaser trailer, it sure is one of the longest ones I’ve ever seen. It basically introduces our would-be heroes and their destiny to become Power Rangers. They’re not so much as troublemakers, they just found themselves in Saturday school, and just like The Breakfast Club, they each have their own unique personalities. There’s no real morphing going on or calling their Dinozords. Even Rita makes a very brief appearance. But how they obtain their powers and some of the visuals do look intriguing, especially if you remember the original Power Rangers and wanted to know what they would look like with a blockbuster budget. But still no sign of Bryan Cranston as Zordon or Bill Hader as Alpha 5.

But there are some noticeable nods to Chronicle in the way Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Zack (Ludi Lin), Billy (RJ Cyler), Trini (Becky G), and Kimberly (Naomi Scott) find their powers, as they trespass into a mountainous area where they find their Power Coins. And even though we don’t get to see the suits on full display, the coins enhance their strength and durability as humans.

There is a sense that Power Rangers will be more gritty than their TV counterparts. The TV show had plenty of cheesy campiness to throw around. But here, the dark colors and tone, tell us that the film won’t be like the Power Rangers we’ve seen in the past.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
