Swiss Army Man is the story of hope, friendship, and farting. The first full-length feature from writer/director team Daniel Scheinert and Dan Kwan …aka “The Daniels.” I don’t want to give any intimate details of the film, because it may be the single most original film I’ve ever seen. If you’ve heard of Swiss Army Man, you probably know the basic plot. A shipwrecked man (Paul Dano) on the verge of suicide finds a washed-up corpse on the beach (Daniel Radcliffe), and their insane friendship restores the hope that our main character can survive his ordeal. Oh yeah and the corpse farts”¦ a lot. The two Daniels won the Directing Award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and the film has quickly developed a cult reputation.

Bonus Features on the Blu-Ray include feature-length audio commentary with the Daniels, Production Designer Jason Kisvarday, and Sound Mixer/Fartist”¦ yes”¦ fartist”¦ Brent Kiser. There are also five deleted scenes worth checking out. There is a section called “Making Manny” in which makeup producer Jason Hamer discusses making one of the Daniel Radcliffe dummies. He mentions the phone call he had with the creators: “What’s wrong with you”¦ I’m in.” They took one of the Radcliffe dummies out for a world tour. The best part of the extras are the 16-minute Behind the Scenes featurette and the hour-long Q&A.

In the Behind the Scenes feature, the filmmakers discuss the surreal nature of filming Paul Dano surfing a dummy, and one take with Dano riding Radcliffe while riding the dummy. Everything about the film is surreal. Daniel Kwan says the goal was to take a bunch of equipment and friends into the wilderness and make as fun a movie as possible. “The movie is a celebration of friendship behind the scenes and on screen.” Scheinert and Kwan give credit to as many people on the set as possible from the DP, to make up department to the gaffers. The molds of Daniel Radcliffe are downright creepy. Of course we gets tons of “how did they do that?” stuff regarding the flagellations and erections”¦ yep, it’s an animatronic penis. You can see from this mini-documentary how much ridiculous fun this film was for the actors and filmmakers and how well the cast and crew got along.

The Q&A session features the writer/director duo, and the sound designer Brent Kiser. Filmed at the Dolby Institute, this was really interesting, especially if you’re a fan of Comic-Con style panel discussions. As usual, the main topic is flagellants.

Swiss Army Man on Blu-Ray is a must-own for collectors. The movie has tons of replay value and is both emotionally satisfying and hilariously funny. The bonus features really add to the film, showing the complex but ultimately fun and creative process the filmmakers used to make one of the most original films of all time.
