The Incredibles Header

A lot of effort is put into perfecting a Pixar project. From the search to the story to the animation, it takes approximately four years for the studio to complete work on one title. Perhaps that is why they are recognized for being one of the top animation studios in the world. But as much as they thrive on their original storytelling, they’ve done well for themselves making sequels. Finding Dory proved that a Pixar sequel is sometimes well worth the wait, and somehow, we keep getting sequels for Cars.

So when it was announced that there would be a Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2, Pixar fans got excited. Now comes word that they will be switching release dates. More on their switch and which films they will be competing against below.

In a story from THR, The Incredibles 2 will take Toy Story 4‘s June 15th, 2018 release date, while Toy Story 4 will take the June 21st, 2019 release date. Sources close to the story say “The two films are swapping dates due to an accelerated production schedule for Incredibles 2.” /Film adds Toy Story 4 is being pushed back due to a few production issues.

It’s not entirely uncommon to see film’s move up or push back their release dates. But the goal is to give the film the time it needs to iron out the kinks. As far as we know, Toy Story 4 will have a romance angle to their story, while it’s still not clear what The Incredibles 2 will be about. The former will be directed by John Lasseter and will be co-directed by Riley’s First Date (the Inside Out short film) director Josh Coole. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack penned the script. The film opens one week after a currently untitled DC project (June 14, 2019) and one week after Transformers 7 (June 21, 2019).

As for The Incredibles 2, Brad Bird returns to the helm. It has been over a decade since we last saw the superpowered family in action, and the director has been unwilling to give any information as to what the sequel could be about. But the new release date means that the film will be sandwiched in between Transformers 6 which opens a week before on June 8, 2016, and Jurassic World 2, which opens a week after on June 22, 2018.
