Kings of Con is a crazy funny new show by Rob Benedict and Richard Speight Jr. of Supernatural fame, where they play caricatures of themselves touring the fan convention circuit, from the backstage point of view. Chock full of guest stars, and equally chock full of laughs, the guys poke fun at themselves and the antics that happen behind the curtain.

Check out the awesomeness below.

Kings of Con 1.1 “Whippany, NJ”: Just gotta say. I love the “Heads Up” warning. Who doesn’t appreciate potty language and too much skin?

Rich: “You never forget the day you’re served your first divorce papers.”

Rich is the ne’er do well, the “let’s party” friend, who holds his caring at arm’s length beneath a “who cares, let’s drink” exterior. Rob laments the loss of his career because he went to “acting school for acting.” He is moping. Rich lists the plusses of con life – number one is women.

So… full disclosure. I’m 5 minutes in and I just saw the first guest celebrity, and while I am excited to see young John Winchester (Matt Cohen) dance and shout in a wig (for some unknown reason), I am more excited to see Father Griffin Munro from my guilty pleasure, General Hospital, dance and shout in a wig (for some unknown reason). Cohen is playing a douche, and he hurts GOD’s feelings.

Other sightings: Death (Julian Richings) is dancing at the con too – one of my favorite guest characters ever. Kevin Chan (Osric Chau) is in a dress and blonde wig.

I spit out my drink when Rich said to Rob, “Oh you brought your penis. That’s cool!” Rob gets lucky.

I legitimately laughed out loud a bunch of times and wished the episode was longer. It was 11 minutes of giggles. Definitely a lot of improv. The guys look like they are having a blast, and so did I.

Kings of Con 1.2 “Whippany, NJ (Still)”: What a good friend! Rob is having breakfast with the cosplay fan he slept with (still wearing the beard), when Rich comes and saves him using the old, “That thing we gotta do…” move. Cannot spoil Rob’s awesome hotel alias, but it’s right out of “Tube Bar” (Google it).

We do learn convention rule 1: Fans are off-limits.” They check the internet for possible repercussions of breaking this rule (which Rich is expected to and always breaks), while Rich gives contradictory advice. But there’s nothing but crickets on the web. So what does a rejected deity do? Confront the girl during Matt’s photo op. By the way, I would definitely like to try a “shiver me timbers” on Matt Cohen. Who knew this guy was so funny! Rob and Rich – you definitely found a comedic diamond in his angsty character rough. Rob interrupts the photoshoot to talk to the cosplayer who did not tag him, while also messing with the “line flow.”

Rich pulls him into a closet with Matt (Cohen), Kim Rhodes (Sheriff Jody Mills), Kurt Fuller (Zachariah), and Osric (Chau) for an intervention.

“I’m just here to get a mop.” The janitor wins!

They pep-talked him as best as possible, and he gave a damn confident, yet weirdly uncomfortable talk at his panel.

And… the cosplayer is unveiled at the end. What do you think she looks like?

Legitimate laughs a-plenty on this little show. The guest glimpses are worth it alone.

Synopsis:

KINGS OF CON
A Single Camera Comedy Series Created by and Starring Rob Benedict & Richard Speight, Jr.

Thanks to their pivotal roles on the hit CW show Supernatural, Richard Speight, Jr. (Band of Brothers, Justified, etc.) and Rob Benedict (Felicity, Waiting, etc.) have become regulars on the fan convention circuit. Now, after years of appearing at airport hotels across the country and abroad, they’ve created Kings of Con, a single camera comedy inspired by their real experiences that goes beyond the autograph lines and photo ops to what really makes the cons crazy and unpredictable – the actors paid to be there.

It’s Broad City meets Curb Your Enthusiasm with the comedic honesty of Louie as Richard and Rob play caricatures of themselves cavorting through the con world: Rich, thrice divorced former actor whose love of the game is fueled by the faux fame he experiences at the hands of a gaggle fans who still think he matters, and Rob, a divorcee-to-be who is back on the circuit to cover the costs of his failed marriage and stalled career. Scripted content mixed with improv, and Rich and Rob’s razor sharp interplay all fuel the spirit of the show, backed by supporting / guest cast of other actors from across the Hollywood spectrum Rob and Richard have come to know over the course of their 20-year careers.

  1. I’ve just watched the first 2 and I was keeling over with laughter. It’s brilliant. Loved your review, thank you.
