The rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise isn’t so much of an actual reboot as it is a prequel that leads up to the original 1968 film. Starting off with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, we saw how mankind made its downward spiral while Apes rose to power. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes showed us just how far man has fallen, and that the Apes were quickly becoming more intelligent. Now with War for the Planet of the Apes, we’ll see man’s last stand against the primates, but because this is a prequel to the original Planet of the Apes, we kind know where it is all heading. While there hadn’t been any significant nods so far that bridge the two franchises, Matt Reeves‘ upcoming film will include a very important character from the original film.
Check out who this mysterious character is in the photo here below.
In a newly released concept art photo that debuted on Entertainment Weekly, we see that Nova will make an appearance in the new film. For those who don’t know, Nova first appeared in the Planet of the Apes film as the mute girl (played by Linda Harrison) who helped Taylor (Charlton Heston). She was also in Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
Having Nova, now played by Amiah Miller, in War for the Planet of the Apes helps bridge the gap between the two films. It may not exactly establish when the reboot and the original meet up, but it does give us an idea, at least. Here’s what Reeves told EW:
“The battle is not just between the humans and the apes, but in Caesar’s soul. The girl is his pull back to his empathy and “” for lack of a better word “” his human side.”
While we didn’t know it at the time, Nova did make a brief appearance in the teaser trailer that was recently released. But she is not our only Easter Egg that links the two. Rise of the Planet of the Apes made a reference to Icarus, the lost spaceship that was piloted by Taylor.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
War for the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters July 14th, 2017.
