It’s been a little while since we’ve heard anything substantial on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things after finding out that we were getting a season two, apart from Sean Astin and Paul Reiser joining the cast. To help hold us over until the second season arrives, a new video has surfaced online showing an animatronic head test for the creature seen in the first season, known as the Demogorgon.
The video comes from the special effects company Spectral Motion, who worked on the aliens seen in Attack the Block, the alien in Paul, and more. They’ve also released some images of the Demogorgon head sculpture and the full-body suit worn for creature.
You can see the video and these images below.
While these are all great, I wish the practical effects would have translated better to the actual show. Perhaps it was just me not paying close enough attention, but I remember thinking the Demogorgon was mostly CGI—if not fully CGI—something covered in a second video seen below. This is not something that bothered me while watching; I’ve gotten used to the use of CGI and simply accept it as normal while patiently awaiting those who fully embrace the practical effects.
Seeing the images below, however, made me think of Tom Woodruff Jr. wearing the suit for the 1988 horror Pumpkinhead. And a Demogorgon that has a presence like Pumpkinhead? That would have been a hell of a lot more horrifying to me and I’m guessing many others. It was certainly an intimidating beastie as is, don’t get me wrong, I just feel like something was lost somewhere and seeing these practical effects, again, makes me wish they shined brighter in the final product.
