Of the many horror films that are out there or currently in production, only a small few have been directed by a female. But since we live in more progressive times, it’s time for them to shatter that glass ceiling. A brand new trailer for XX has debuted online, highlighting one of the great things about the film: the fact that it is an anthology of films directed by female directors.
Check out the latest trailer below.
The four directors of XX are musician Annie Clark (also known by the stage name St. Vincent); Karyn Kusama, of last year’s darling The Invitation; Roxanne Benjamin (Southbound); and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird).
As interesting as the content looks, I’m hoping the film gets a lot of attention to prove that females can direct any kind of genre. XX is the perfect film to get that message across. It allows them to express themselves and show that they too are capable of giving us just more than a few scares.
Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool, and Christina Kirk will all star in the four films that are put together in this anthology by Sofia Carrillo.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
XX is a new all-female helmed horror anthology featuring four dark tales written and directed by fiercely talented women: Annie Clark (St. Vincent) rocks her directorial debut with THE BIRTHDAY PARTY; Karyn Kusama (THE INVITATION, GIRLFIGHT) exorcises HER ONLY LIVING SON; Roxanne Benjamin (SOUTHBOUND) screams DON’T FALL; and Jovanka Vuckovic (THE CAPTURED BIRD) dares to open THE BOX. Award-winning animator Sofia Carrillo (LA CASA TRISTE) wraps together four suspenseful stories of terror featuring a cast including Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool and Christina Kirk.
XX will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22. It then will be released theatrically and on VOD on February 17th.
