Last week on Gotham, Falcone (John Doman) put a hit out on Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), and Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) was a ton of fun while doing it. In the midst of that, Bullock (Donal Logue) and Gordon found Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) worshippers. Ed, Barbara, and Tabitha (Cory Michael Smith, Erin Richards, Jessica Lucas) went forward with the plan to destroy Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), with visions of his dead father, causing him to kill a staff member. Selina (Camren Bicondova) and her mom reunited. Lee (Morena Baccharin) made Falcone call off the hit.

Spoilers below.

Gotham 3.13 “Mad City: Smile Like You Mean It” review: The gang breaks in to grab Jerome, led by Dwight, while they giggle in glee. Bullock, Gordon, and Fox (Chris Chalk) investigate the area, surmising pretty quickly that they intend to resurrect Jerome. They find a live one who tells of the awakening. Dwight, meanwhile, is all Dr. Frankenstein.

Bullock: “This is 50 wackadoos tops.” There are so many more than that. Dwight slices Jerome’s face off when he fails to come alive, and convinces the masses that they are all Jerome.

Barbara wakes up a hungover Penguin to pull himself together. “Do that disco-vampire thing with your hair.” Hahaha Barbara! She lures Penguin to her place, while Tabitha forces one of the heads of family to say he’s holding Ed hostage. Then kills him. The ladies take out the other families. Penguin is then lured to a chemical plant by a frantic sounding Ed. I’m really nervous for him. I love Penguin. How will he escape the masterminding of Ed Nygma?

Selina’s mom takes the money and proves that she is a con artist. Poor little girl is so upset, betrayed by her mother and by Bruce (David Mazouz). This must be the moment she really slides back to the villain side.

Lee examines the body and there’s a twitch. She is so full of anger at Jim and lashes out. She goes back to her lab, and Jerome is really back and so much fun. The banter between him and Lee is fantastic. “Where’s my face?”

The followers are holding up a news station, and Jim and Bullock sneak in and shut it down. Outside, Jerome steals Dwight and staples his face back on. I am not making this up.

Jerome gets on TV and urges the city to do whatever it wants like The Purge, except it is still illegal, but there’s no one to stop them. “You too, shall be reborn.” He blows up the power plant (and Dwight), and all the lights go out.

Jim: “My god.”

My god is right. That might be one of the most suspenseful endings on Gotham to date. Jim’s face as he watches his city descend into darkness is quite powerful.

The whole episode had me on the edge. It felt like 5 minutes. Just when you think this crime laden dark city could not get any worse, something like this happens. Why do people even live here?

Gotham airs Monday nights at 8:00pm ET on FOX.

  1. Going backwards, I agree about the powerful ending and Ben McKenzie has an amazing ability to convey all of the emotion in a split second with just his expression in the shadows. Intense.

More time with Jim and Harvey was a bonus, but too bad there wasn’t Jim, Harvey and Jerome with interaction. Maybe it’s coming, but more this past week would have been better. Without using Lucius where he doesn’t naturally fit, his dynamic along with Jim’s and Harvey’s is a welcome addition. What isn’t and is the opposite is albatross Lee. Just having her in the shot on screen at all is a drag, sort of like Barbara used to be during the first season before she turned over-the-top insane, a much easier (and fun) role for any actor. Now, any time Lee is mumbling in that detached, stiff way that’s her trademark, I just want her to disappear. It’s a shame, because there was a time until earlier last year, when I had high hopes.

And another finale and wait comes too soon, but looking forward to what Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue and Cameron Monaghan will bring. I hope it’s heavy on that focus.

    Thanks for the commentary.
