‘Deadpool 2’ Eyeing ‘Stranger Things’ Star David Harbour For Cable

Cable and Deadpool

Drew Goddard is currently working with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to put the finishing touches on the Deadpool 2 script, which promises to add new mutants Cable and Domino. While the three write the script, director David Leitch and star/producer Ryan Reynolds have yet to cast both roles.

There have been many names thrown around, and now there is a new name being added to the list. A report says that Stranger Things star David Harbour is now one of the frontrunners for the role of Cable. Check out the full report below.

The actor doesn’t have the job yet, but The Wrap says that he is being eyed for the role. Collider adds that he has screen tested with Reynolds, and is now one of the actors under consideration. Physically, Harbour looks like he can fit the role. Not only that, but his acting resume has shown us that he is ready for a comic book movie. Let’s not count whatever little screen time he had in Suicide Squad. Aside from that, he had terrific performances in Black Mass, The Newsroom, and End of Watch.

Collider’s sources also tell them that Michael Shannon was in the mix at one point in time, but is no longer in consideration due to scheduling conflicts. Kyle Chandler was also rumored to be in the running, while Stephen Lang threw his own name into the hat.

It’s still not clear if the studio will even look at the suggested names Deadpool gave during the end credits of the film. By the way things look now, it doesn’t look like we are going to get Dolph Lundgren as Cable. Though it would have been interesting to see if Keira Knightly would have taken the role. I say that jokingly, of course.

In all seriousness, it will be interesting to see how all of this pans out. For one thing, whomever gets the role will most likely sign on for multiple features. So there is a possibility that Cable could show up not only in a Deadpool sequel but an X-Men film or even X-Force. Deadpool, Cable, and Domino were all a part of X-Force in the comics, so it makes sense that their appearance would segue into the mutant ensemble film, which is being penned by Joe Carnahan.

But one of the reasons why the sequel has hit somewhat of a stall is that they want to get Cable right. Which is a bit difficult considering Cable’s very complex backstory. Cable is Nathan Summers, the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey’s clone). He was transported into the future as an infant where he grew up to be a great time-traveling warrior often times appearing in the present to deal with some sort of threat. As if the X-Men film continuity wasn’t already confusing enough, now we have to worry about this. That being said, it seems fitting to have a character with a confusing backstory be a part of a franchise with an equally confusing continuity.

Of course, we will keep you posted on who gets the job.

  1. Hm. I was among those who liked Stephen Lang for Cable but will admit that David Harbour might be a better choice. I like it!
