Dwayne Johnson in The Fate of the Furious

It’s hard to believe that we’ve only gotten two trailers for The Fate of the Furious so far. Universal has just released the second one today (watch the first here), and if you thought you’ve seen everything in this franchise, well, the new trailer shatters that notion with a torpedo and a few missiles.

Yes, now the family will have to contend with military weaponry. Tanks were one thing, but a submarine is something that they will have to survive if they want to rescue Dom (Vin Diesel). Check out the newest trailer below.

The first trailer gave us a hint at a submarine chasing a number of cars, and while we thought that was the extent of it, director F. Gary Gray pushed it up a notch by having it fire torpedos and missiles. There’s plenty of action to go around, which revolves around Charlize Theron‘s character controlling all of the cars in New York City? Yeah, the franchise never really cared for a strong story, but then again, neither did the fanbase. There have been eight of these films so far, why fix what’s not broken.

As to why Dom leaves his family, that remains to be seen. All that’s revealed is Theron’s character has crossed paths with Dom in the past three films. So it should be interesting to see why she has been so fascinated by the family man.

Still, there’s no getting over Dwayne Johnson facing down a torpedo in what looks like the wildest game of chicken.

Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Jason Statham, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Kurt Russell, with Helen Mirren also star.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

On the heels of 2015’s Furious 7, one of the fastest movies to reach $1 billion worldwide in box-office history and the sixth-biggest global title of all time, comes the newest chapter in one of the most popular and enduring motion-picture serials of all time: The Fate of the Furious.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game””and the rest of the crew has been exonerated””the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage”¦and to bring home the man who made them a family.

For The Fate of the Furious, Vin Diesel is joined by a returning all-star cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky and Kurt Russell. In addition to Theron, the series welcomes newcomers Scott Eastwood and Oscar® winner Helen Mirren. The film is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and produced by returning producers Neal H. Moritz, Michael Fottrell and Diesel.

The Fate of the Furious races into theaters on April 14, 2017.
