This week, the gang at Screen Junkies give La La Land the Honest Trailers treatment, days removed from the hit film’s release on Blu-ray. If you were living under a rock in 2016 and early 2017, La La Land was THE movie; a throwback Hollywood musical, about Hollywood starring two young gorgeous stars, filled with tremendous original songs. It was to movie musicals what Hamilton was to Broadway. The film racked up a ridiculous amount of accolades, including winning 6 of 14 Oscars it was nominated for. Of course, many only remember La La Land for the Oscar it didn’t win; the controversial and embarrassing ending to the Academy Awards when their celebration for Best Picture was interrupted by the realization that they actually LOST to Moonlight. So without further ado, let’s get to the Honest Trailer for one of the most talked about films in Hollywood in a long time…
Check out the video below to see the Honest Trailer for La La Land.
From the filmmaker (Damien Chazelle) who apparently has a love/hate relationship with jazz, watch the film that meticulously pays homage to the classic musicals of the past while managing to appeal to today’s audiences… because who doesn’t want to stare at Ryan Gosling for 2-hours. Enjoy the fantasy about Los Angeles, where gridlock is an excuse to dance on the highway, and meet an adorable couple whose relationship can withstand anything… except mutual success. Narrator Jon Bailey has a great line here, “Whew, you guys almost had to compromise!”
Laugh alongside with Gosling and Emma Stone, whose chemistry is undeniable, but their dancing is unremarkable. And enjoy the amazing songs like, the Los Angeles song, “City of Cars.” But WAIT!!! Oh my god this is embarrassing. This is actually Moonlight‘s Honest Trailer!!! I knew this was coming… and it’s fantastic. Bailey apologizes profusely as we get Oscar footage from the end of the show with the Moonlight crew awkwardly celebrating. He then has to throw to his next La La Land song, but change it up to the new movie and it’s a hilarious amalgam of generalizations about Moonlight‘s characters and themes, with the focus being “Mahershala Ali.”
Starring: All these people who would’ve been thanked had that guy from Price Waterhouse Cooper not been too busy taking selfies to keep track of the envelope… (and they proceed to read off a list of Moonlight cast and crew… great. New Title: Big Trouble in Little Chiron. This was certainly a unique Honest Trailer, but then as Bailey points out, unfortunately La La Land and Moonlight will be linked forever.
Screen Junkies currently have over 6 million subscribers on YouTube and release new Honest Trailers every Tuesday.
