Animaniacs

A reboot of the popular ’90s animated series Animaniacs is being developed.

The reboot is being developed by Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Television, with original executive producer Steven Spielberg expected to be involved with the new version as well.

The new Animaniacs is not officially happening just yet, so it’s not yet known where it might air. It’s only in the earliest stages of development, and a lot needs to be done still before it gets the greenlight.

The show found its way to Netflix last year, and has experienced a boost in popularity since then. That, paired with the fact that revivals of older hit TV shows is in right now, led to the decision to throw some ideas around and see what they come up with.

Animaniacs was created by Tom Ruegger, and it was the second collaboration between himself and Spielberg, Amblin Television, and WB Animation. The first was Tiny Toon Adventures. Another was Pinky and the Brain, which was a spinoff featuring characters who initially appeared in recurring segments on Animaniacs.

It’s not clear at the moment what Ruegger’s role might be, if he’ll even be involved at all, should the reboot get the greenlight.

Animaniacs ran from 1993 to 1998, airing first on Fox Kids before moving to the Kids’ WB block on The WB. In total 99 episodes were made, as well as a straight-to-video movie titled Wakko’s Wish.
