Is it just me or does there seem to be an uptick in the number of Sherlock Holmes adaptations/re-imaginings of late? Movies, television, comics, you name it. Luckily, quite a few of them have been entertaining and, in some cases, astounding. It seems only fair then that we have a version for all ages, one that the kiddos will enjoy and with which they might identify. Kid Sherlock #1 fits the bill with plenty to offer all readers.

The love for previous forms of the stories and characters is delightful to behold. “Elementary, my dear Watson” may be a renowned phrase, but it never appeared in the original texts; it came later in film. Homage is given, however, as this takes place in an elementary school. Landlady Mrs. Hudson became Ms. Hudson the teacher for this incarnation, garnering much respect from me. Sherlock wears that iconic deerstalker cap, too. Watson becoming a dog is unique to this story, though.

This first comic contains a case called “The Smell” and is contained to this one issue. I think that is perfect as young readers may not collect each issue and would therefore get lost in a longer story arc. The concept is fun and made me laugh a time or two. It is a perfect starter comic for the wee ones. I will be hitting up a comic shop to grab a couple of copies for some younger nephews.

John Watson doesn’t feel like he really fits in as the new student at Baker Elementary. If it wasn’t bad enough being the only dog, it seems he has already gained the attention of the class bully, Kyle. Out in the play yard, Watson feels even more alone until he meets a young boy named Sherlock Holmes. While quite clever, Sherlock is often so lost in his own thoughts that he is oblivious to the people around him. However, when Watson shows an interest in Sherlock’s work it sparks the beginning of an adventure Sherlock never expected: friendship. Their first mission, identify the bad smell that has been afflicting their classroom.
