Now that the franchise as a whole is going by the name The Conjuring Universe, we knew it was only a matter of time before The Conjuring 3 would be on the way. The first two movies making over $638 million worldwide combined probably helps as well.
It’s being reported that New Line Cinema has hired The Conjuring 2 writer David Leslie Johnson to work on the script for the trilogy-maker. James Wan, who directed the first two movies and was also a writer and producer on the second installment, is expected to be involved in the project, though the report says he’ll likely produce this time with a new director brought in.
Story details are not yet known, but like the first two movies The Conjuring 3 will focus on another one of the experiences of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The couple are played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the movies.
David Leslie Johnson’s other credits include Orphan, Red Riding Hood, Wrath of the Titans, and episodes of The Walking Dead. He’s also worked on new Nightmare on Elm Street and Dungeons & Dragons movies. Wan even brought him in to help with a re-write of Aquaman, which is also at Warner Bros. and stars Wilson, who’s playing the villainous half-brother of Jason Momoa’s title character, Orm Marius, also known as Ocean Master.
Believe it or not this third movie will be the seventh in The Conjuring Universe franchise, including both released and announced future releases. After the first two main movies, there’s Annabelle and its upcoming sequel Annabelle: Creation, which will arrive in theaters on August 11th; the launch of a second spinoff, The Nun, which is expected to release next year; and the third spinoff, The Crooked Man, which was announced recently.
