Another actor has signed on to star in the Hellboy reboot, titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, as it’s been announced that Deadwood and American Gods star Ian McShane has joined the cast.
The actor is set to play Professor Broom, the adoptive father of Hellboy. The character was played by the late, great John Hurt in 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy: The Golden Army, both directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman in the title role.
Not much is known about Rise of the Blood Queen yet, but it will involve Hellboy dealing with a medieval sorceress seeking to destroy humankind.
McShane joins Stranger Things star David Harbour, who is set to play Hellboy in this new adaptation of Mike Mignola‘s comic book series.
Directing is Neil Marshall, who’s known first for directing movies Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Centurion, and Doomsday, and more recently for directing episodes of TV series like Game of Thrones, Black Sails, Constantine, Hannibal, and Westworld. Marshall has already said that his take on the comic will be R-rated, bloody, and have as many practical effects as possible, which helps greatly in easing the pain of knowing the movie won’t involve del Toro or Perlman.
The screenplay is penned by Mignola, Eureka creator Andrew Cosby, and Christopher Golden.
