It wasn’t too long ago that Disney announced that Netflix would no longer stream their content and that they would be launching their own streaming service in 2019. At the time, many thought that meant only Disney and Pixar features, with Marvel and Star Wars continuing to stream at Netflix.
Now it appears that is no longer the case. Everything under the Disney sun will be moving over to the still unnamed streaming site. More on the story below.
Per Variety, CEO Bob Iger made the announcement during a question-and-answer session at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications, and Entertainment conference in Beverly Hills, California. “We’ve now decided we will put the Marvel and Star Wars movies on this app as well,” Iger told attendees.
The announcement puts an end to rumors that Disney would split their content with Netflix. Now almost all of their features can be seen in one neat streaming app. However, it still does not answer the question of what will happen to shows on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney XD. It’s unclear if they will take Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher with them. Iger didn’t mention the current deal Netflix has with Marvel, but we can probably expect to hear more about their own streaming app in the months leading up to the launch.
But at least we know we can watch Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm films on the streaming app.
In addition to the streaming app, they will also be launching an ESPN streaming app. Disney is the parent company of ESPN. The former will be launching sometime in 2019 with the latter being targeted for an early 2018 date.
As much as we love Disney and their properties, subscribing to another service just adds more to the bill. On top of whatever we may be already subscribing to, like Hulu or HBO Now. And it remains to be seen how successful this launch is when compared to the likes of Netflix. They may own a lot of huge properties, but is it enough to entice fans to subscribe to a new service? And how long before other networks follow suit?
Of course, we will keep you up to date as this progresses.
