Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ TV Series Being Developed For Disney Streaming Service

The news that a brand new Star Wars trilogy is being overseen by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson isn’t the only big news regarding the franchise tonight.

It’s also being reported that a live-action Star Wars TV series is currently being developed, which will air on the streaming service Disney announced earlier this year.

Unfortunately there’s no details yet on what this live-action TV series will be about or which characters—familiar or new—will be involved. What we do know is that if it does happen, it’ll be the first live-action Star Wars series we’ve seen.

There’s been plenty of talk of a live-action series in the past, including that one many fans were excited about which was described as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space.” The last we heard anything about it was last year. George Lucas himself apparently wrote 100 episodes for a TV series, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said that his material wasn’t thrown out and was still being explored, but it’s unclear if any of that will be used for this newly announced project.

In addition to a live-action Star Wars TV series, two more series were also announced for the currently unnamed Disney streaming service. One is a series set in Pixar’s Monsters Inc. universe, and the other is a High School Musical series.

Much of what will be offered on the streaming service will be Disney-owned titles. However, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger, who confirmed the Star Wars TV series in a quarterly earnings call with investors, also said during the call that they would consider licensing third-party content.

There’s also the talks of Disney being interested in acquiring 20th Century Fox film and television divisions, which would add a ton of potential content to their newborn streaming service when it launches sometime in 2019 if they’re somehow able to pull that deal off.
