We’ve been hearing about a movie adaptation of the comic Cowboy Ninja Viking for quite a while now, but nothing has come of it yet. The movie is still in the works, currently set up at Universal, and now comes word that a director has been chosen for the project.

According to reports, Universal has hired Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren to helm the film, which has Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt attached.

Pratt will play the title character, an assassin who utilizes the skills of three different personalities: one a cowboy, one a ninja, and one a viking. The actor is also a producer on the film, and the report says he was a big part of the push for hiring a woman to direct.

In addition to directing multiple episodes of Game of Thrones, MacLaren has been behind the camera for episodes of The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, The X-Files, Lie to Me, Camelot, Hell on Wheels, The Leftovers, Better Call Saul, Westworld, The Deuce, and more.

The latest draft of the screenplay was penned by Craig Mazin, whose previous credits include Scary Movie 3 and 4, The Hangover Part II and Part III, Identity Thief, and The Huntsman: Winter’s War. A previous draft, as was reported back in 2010, was penned by Deadpool and Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Cowboy Ninja Viking is currently scheduled for a June 28, 2019 release date.
