Vertigo's The Kitchen

The Handmaid’s Tale and Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss is set to star in The Kitchen, New Line’s upcoming adaptation of writer Ollie Masters and illustrator Ming Doyle‘s Vertigo comic book of the same name.

Moss joins a cast that already includes Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy. The trio will play mob wives in 1970s Hell’s Kitchen who end up taking over the business after an FBI raid puts many mobsters, including their husbands, behind bars.

Here’s more on the comic book from Amazon:

In Hell’s Kitchen in the 1970s, married women have their place””and it isn’t out on the streets collecting loan shark payments for the Irish mob. But when their gangster husbands get sent up the river, prison widows Kath, Raven and Angie can’t see any other way to make a living””and, as it turns out, they’re pretty damned good at the job.

So good, in fact, that they start attracting attention from the big leagues. As the trio expands their operation and consolidates their grip on Manhattan’s west side, a sit-down with the mafia higher-ups is inevitable. If they play their cards right, the city could be their oyster””as long as all the bodies they’ve left in their wake stay buried.

Collecting the seven-issue VERTIGO miniseries by the acclaimed creative team of Ollie Masters, Ming Doyle and Jordie Bellaire, THE KITCHEN opens a cracked and sooty window onto a bygone era of New York City and the hardscrabble ambitions that fueled its rise.

Moss will play a character who was abused by her husband and ends up falling in love with the violence of organized crime. McCarthy’s character is described as an adoring mother who leads the wives to take over the mob and keep things running. While Haddish’s character is prepared to kill anyone who gets in the way of her plans.

The Kitchen will be written and directed by Andrea Berloff, whose screenwriting credits include Straight Outta Compton, World Trade Center, Blood Father, and Sleepless. This marks her directorial debut.

The movie is currently scheduled for a September 20, 2019 release.
