Margot Robbie

One of the names that we’ve been hearing about for a role in Quentin Tarantino‘s next project, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has been Margot Robbie. The film is set in 1960s Hollywood and involves the Manson Family murders, and Tarantino was looking at Robbie for the role of Sharon Tate. Now Robbie has confirmed that she has indeed been cast in the movie. She joins the previously cast Leonardo DiCaprio, who will play a TV actor looking to make it in Hollywood and Tate’s neighbor, and Brad Pitt as his friend and stunt double who shares his aspirations.

In addition to that, a group of notable actors are now in talks for various roles in the film. This includes Burt Reynolds, Kurt Russell (who starred in the director’ last project, The Hateful Eight), and Tarantino regulars Tim Roth and Michael Madsen.

Robbie confirmed the news to IndieWire while promoting her new movie Terminal. Here’s what she had to say about working with Tarantino and playing Tate:

“Tarantino is one of my bucket-list directors. As long as I can remember, I’ve been a huge Tarantino fan.

Beyond anything, I’ve just always wanted to see him work. And I want to see how he runs a set, and how he directs people, and what the vibe is onset, and what’s in the script, and then what happens on the day. I’m just fascinated by all of it, fascinated. So it’s going to be a crazy experience to witness it firsthand. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of doing.”

She also talked about playing Tate, saying:

“I feel a responsibility with every character I play, whether they’re fictional or real life. To play her right, play her truthfully, and kind of understand her emotional journey.”

Robbie was also asked about Tarantino retiring after his 10th film, which would be the one after Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She like many others isn’t fond of the idea, saying “I hope he changes his mind and keeps making movies. Ten? I don’t want just 10 Tarantino films.”

As for Reynolds, if a deal gets worked out he would play George Spahn, a nearly blind old man who rents his ranch out as a filming location for western films. Spahn is convinced by Charles Manson to let him and his followers live on the ranch, and in exchange he would have some of his female followers sleep with Spahn and serve as his eyes.

Russell, Roth, and Madsen are said to be in talks for smaller roles.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is currently scheduled to be released on August 9, 2019.
