We’ve been hearing whispers about a Bill & Ted 3 for many years now (and long before that). But today, it’s been made official.
Nearly three decades after the 1989 original, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and its 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, it’s been confirmed that a third movie titled Bill & Ted Face the Music is finally happening, and that Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will both be returning to reprise their roles as the title characters.
The report says that the trilogy-maker is now in pre-production and will be shopped around at the Cannes Film Festival, which is taking place this week and next week.
As anyone who’s familiar with the movies knows Bill S. Preston Esq. and Theodore Logan will one day save the universe with their music. Unfortunately, where the new movie picks up, that has yet to happen. Here’s a description from Deadline:
The new movie will see the two best friends as middle-aged men with family responsibilities who have yet to fulfill their destiny. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever. With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns the duo that only their music can save life as we know it. Out of luck and inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on another time-travel adventure “” with the help of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures and some sympathetic music legends “” to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe as we know it.
The script for the movie comes from the original creators, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. In addition to writing the screenplays for all three films, the duo also penned Mom and Dad Save the World. Solomon’s other credits include Super Mario Bros., Men in Black, Charlie’s Angels, and Now You See Me and its sequel, while Matheson’s credits include A Goofy Movie, Mr. Wrong, and Rapture-Palooza.
Each installment of the franchise has had a new director, and that’s no different here. Excellent Adventure was directed by Stephen Herek, who also directed Critters, The Mighty Ducks, Mr. Holland’s Opus, and the live-action 101 Dalmatians (back before live-action Disney remakes were all the rage). Bogus Journey was directed by Peter Hewitt, who also directed The Borrowers, Garfield, and Zoom.
Stepping in to direct Bill & Ted 3 is Dean Parisot, who’s best known for directing the cult classic Galaxy Quest. His other credits include Fun with Dick and Jane, RED 2, and episodes of various TV series including Monk, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Justified, Masters of Sex, and Santa Clarita Diet. Parisot won an Oscar for the live-action short film The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, which he shared with comedian Steven Wright.
Of the long-awaited news, Winter and Reeves released this statement:
“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm, we’ve got a dream team.”
Reeves and Winter re-united recently for the Bill & Ted photo previewed in the image above, which comes from Entertainment Weekly. Head there to check out the full image.
No release window for Bill & Ted 3 has been determined yet.
