‘The Last Drive-In’ Trailer: Joe Bob Briggs Brings 24-Hour Horror Marathon To Shudder This July

BAADASSSSS!   |

The Last Drive-In

The next Friday the 13th is going to be one to remember for horror movie fans as Joe Bob Briggs, America’s preeminent drive-in critic and expert on the sleaziest and looniest B-movies ever made, brings The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs to the horror streaming service Shudder.

For 24 straight hours beginning on Friday July 13, Briggs will screen 13 of the greatest horror flicks of all time in what he describes in the newly released trailer (which you can watch here below) as a “dusk to dawn to dusk to almost dawn again” marathon.

Anyone who grew up watching Joe Bob on his successful Movie Channel series Drive-In Theater and on his weekly TNT mini-marathon program MonsterVision will be excited to know that The Last Drive-In will feature the return of the staples of a great Joe Bob show, including digressions, rants, offbeat celebrity interviews, a new Mail Girl, those awesome “Drive-In Totals,” and more.

There will even be “commercial interruptions,” which is odd to find on an internet streaming service, but it will actually be Joe Bob “being annoying in the middle of the movie” and “explaining the history of drive-in cinema.” Three of the movies already announced are the creepy thriller Tourist Trap, the seminal slasher shocker Sleepaway Camp, and the morbidly hilarious horror comedy Basket Case.

In the early 1980s, Briggs saw Basket Case at the Cannes Film Market and became one of the film’s most vocal supporters, championing an uncut theatrical release in the U.S. that helped make it a midnight movie smash hit.

Viewers can participate in a conversation with Shudder’s Twitter account during the marathon and be eligible for cool prizes and more. Briggs will be promoting The Last Drive-In with a Reddit AMA on July 10 and host screenings at the Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, NY on July 11th and the Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas, TX on July 12th.

I discovered Briggs’ writing in middle school and he remains one of the most influential voices in my developing love of film of all stripes. Watching MonsterVision on Saturday nights exposed me to some of the strangest, scariest flicks I had ever seen. Joe Bob fans have been clamoring for his return to the small screen for years, and thanks to Shudder, their hopes are about to be realized.

The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs will premiere at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PDT) on July 13, 2018 and run until later the next day.
