Horror is best when shared with friends and there is no better way to enjoy horror with friends than with The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder. Back in 2018, a supposed one-time-only return for Joe Bob literally crashed the internet. Soon he was back for a few specials, before The Last Drive-In officially returned last year, a Friday night double feature of horror, complete with Joe Bob’s usually insightful and hilarious commentary, special guests, and of course Darcy the Mailgirl. Perhaps there is no better time, since we all quarantined away due to COVID-19, for Joe Bob to return and save us from the monotony of social distancing, remote learning, and zoom meetings. The Last Drive In’s second season begins this Friday night, April 24th on Shudder.

Friday night on AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder, Joe Bob Briggs returned with another The Last Drive-In special, the Halloween Hootenanny, featuring a triple threat of Michael Myers movies and Darcy the Mailgirl doing Tom Atkins cosplay. The original 1978 Carpenter classic was followed by 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers and 1989’s Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. The latter of which, Joe Bob called a torture device. You won’t have to wait too long to get your fill of Joe Bob’s wisecracking commentary, film history tidbits, and drive-in totals as he’ll be ushering in the holiday season with Joe Bob’s Red Christmas, a holiday-themed triple threat of horror going live on Shudder on Friday, December 13, 2019.

Back in September when we were watching trailers for Haunt and The Furies and gearing up for Shudder’s stellar October lineup, we mentioned that they were also teasing a special treat that many were hoping would end up being a Halloween special for The Last Drive-In thanks to a tweet from Joe Bob Briggs himself.

We’ve had a 24-hour marathon with Joe Bob. Thanksgiving and Christmas specials. And those even led to a weekly series which has a season two coming next year. But one thing this celebration of horror has not yet had is its very own Halloween special. This week, hopes became a reality as Shudder confirmed Joe Bob’s Halloween Hootenanny is coming this month. It’s been a hell of a year for horror fans, especially for those who have fond memories of watching Joe Bob Briggs hosting MonsterVision and Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater in the ’90s. That’s because Shudder brought him back for one last hurrah, a 24-hour horror marathon last summer. But fate had different plans. The marathon was hugely popular, and not only crashed the streaming service but also created its own little monster in the process. Its success led to a pair of holiday specials, “The Dinners of Death” for Thanksgiving and “A Very Joe Bob Christmas.”

Continuing to grow stronger from his resurrection popularity, Joe Bob was eventually given a brand new weekly series called The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. For the past eight weeks, fans have gathered to enjoy a new double feature each Friday night. But with the ninth and final episode set to air tomorrow night, those same fans have been left wondering if there would be any more to look forward to. And thankfully, we finally have an answer to that question as Shudder has given the series a second season.

Shudder bringing back Joe Bob Briggs for a special 24-hour horror marathon last summer turned out to be an excellent decision. The marathon was so popular, it crashed the streaming service.

That led to a pair of holiday specials, “The Dinners of Death” for Thanksgiving followed by “A Very Joe Bob Christmas.” At the same time the holiday specials were announced, it was also revealed that Joe Bob was getting a brand new series sometime in 2019.
