Venom Starring Tom Hardy

Here’s a new image you might want to sink your teeth into. Just ahead of its panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Sony has dropped new images from Venom, their first Spider-Man-Less spinoff.

While many have questioned if a universe full of supporting Spider-Man characters, villains, and anti-heroes can work, its titles are attracting some talent. For Venom, the talent doesn’t get any bigger than Tom Hardy, who plays the title character. Now before we get to see more from the film at SDCC this week check out the new image, along with what Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer had to say about the film, below.

Speaking to EW, Hardy said the decision to play Eddie Brock aka Venom was easy. But his reasons may have been more superficial:

“As far as Marvel characters, I have to say for me, Venom looks the coolest. That sounds a bit shallow! But I appreciate that he has a kind of brazen swagger and a zero foxtrot attitude.”

Joking aside, Hardy is right. The anti-hero does have a very lethal streak to him. And he doesn’t hide it. Though the cinematic version may be slightly different, there are elements about the film that do draw inspiration from the source material.

Like the comics, Brock is a journalist who becomes the new host body of an alien symbiote known as Venom. However, the film will deviate from the origins – since Spider-Man is not a part of this spinoff universe. Based on the trailers, it looks like the symbiote will bond to Eddie during one of his investigations. Unfortunately, this alien has a very dangerous personality and has a huge influence on Eddie’s decision-making.

Hardy continues:

“There’s a tragic clown element, which I find funny and is harmonious with some of the work that I like to do. There’s something funny about the circumstances of having a gift but it’s a tragic gift. It’s a superpower you don’t really want, but at the same time, you love it. It makes you feel special. He’s a reluctant hero and an anti-hero.”

That kind of relationship is rarely seen in any film. Especially when you have a relationship where an alien has taken over a human body. Here’s what Fleischer had to say about that:

“Usually a human gets imbued with powers or an alien comes from outer space and has to figure out how to live on our Earth. But this is really about a relationship between two people who have to work together to create this hybrid symbiotic relationship.”

Hardy compares it to Ren and Stimpy:

“It’s a bit like Ren and Stimpy, you know? They have different sounds. I always saw Venom as sounding like a James Brown lounge lizard, and Eddie Brock is kind of… I don’t know, an everyday kind of guy. But he’s inherited this massive ego, this beast.”

Venom will be the first of the Spider-Man spinoffs to exist without the Webslinger. There are other spinoffs in the works or in early development as well that include Silver and Black, a Silk spinoff, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and a Morbius film starring Jared Leto.

You can check out the full piece and another new image over at EW.

Venom opens in theaters on October 5, 2018. Be sure to click right here for more on the movie including trailers.
