‘Shazam!’ Scribe Henry Gayden To Write Sequel, With Director David F. Sandberg Expected To Return

Shazam! Header

As expected, Shazam! was the number one film at the box office last weekend. In fact, it exceeded everyone’s expectations grossing over $56.8 million for a $159 million worldwide haul.

With the superhero film starring Zachary Levi and Mark Strong reaching key benchmarks, it looks like WB wants to keep that momentum going by bringing back the film’s first writer Henry Gayden. Additionally, director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran are both likely to return as well. More on the report below.

The Wrap was the first to break the news on the creative team’s return. It looks like it will be a while before Gayden can jump back into Shazam! as the writer will be busy penning the script for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s adaptation of Last Human, a forthcoming novel of the same name by Lee Bacon. The film is being described as a “reverse E.T.” where three artificial intelligence robots discover a human child.

Of course, the mid-credit scene opens the door for a possible sequel. But then we have to remember there’s the standalone film for Shazam nemesis Black Adam as well, which is currently under development with Dwayne Johnson set to play the title character. While it’s likely that the film will portray the character as an anti-hero, it’s highly unlikely that Johnson will play the villain. We will just have to wait and see.

But WB seems confident with Shazam! by greenlighting a sequel so quickly.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Shazam!:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word””SHAZAM!””this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Still a kid at heart””inside a ripped, godlike body””Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

Shazam! is open in theaters now. Be sure to check out our review of the film and trailer right here.
