Willow Movie

There are already multiple Lucasfilm TV series coming to Disney’s streaming service Disney+ including The Mandalorian and an untitled series following Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Now another Lucasfilm title could be on the way, but it’s not set in the Star Wars universe. According to reports, Ron Howard and Jon Kasdan are in negotiations to bring a TV series based on the 1988 fantasy movie Willow to the streaming service.

Willow was directed by Howard, from a story by George Lucas. Bob Dolman wrote the screenplay.

Howard was a guest on the MTV podcast Happy Sad Confused, where he said that there were “serious discussions” between Disney and he and Kasdan. Here’s what he had this to say about the potential project:

“I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

The title role in the film was played by Star Wars alum Warwick Davis. According to Howard, if a TV series does happen it would follow a Willow who is older, wiser, and better with a weapon than he was in the movie.

Here’s what Howard had to say about Davis:

“Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action.”

For anyone who is not familiar with the original movie, it follows a farmer and aspiring sorcerer named Willow Ufgood who finds himself protecting a special baby from an evil queen. Starring alongside Davis was Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Jean Marsh, Kevin Pollak, Rick Overton, Patricia Hayes, Pat Roach, David Steinberg, Phil Fondacaro, Tony Cox, Mark Northover, and Billy Barty.

The movie scored two Oscar nominations, for best sound and visual effects. If you’ve never seen it, I’d highly recommend picking up a copy and giving it a watch. I’ve included a trailer below.

Howard and Kasdan recently worked together on Solo: A Star Wars Story, which was directed by Howard and written by Jon Kasdan and his father Lawrence Kasdan.
