Adam Sandler hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend, marking his first time back on the long-running NBC late-night sketch show since his 1995 firing by the network. A sore subject he addressed in his opening monologue during his song, “I Was Fired.”

The humorous tune, which contained a guest appearance by Chris Rock, also mentioned how his friend and co-star Chris Farley had been fired at the same time. To close the show, Sandler performed a more somber song in tribute to Farley, who died in 1997 of a drug overdose at age 33.

After his dismissal from SNL, Sandler, who was given his big break at the comedy show in 1990, went on to have a hugely successful movie career, headlining films that have a combined box office gross of over $2 billion. The actor, who had hits with The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, 50 First Dates,, and Billy Madison, was part of the SNL cast with Farley, along with Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Chris Rock, David Spade, Tim Meadows, Julia Sweeney, and Rob Schneider. In 2010, Sandler starred in Grown Ups alongside former SNL co-stars Chris Rock and David Spade, who reunited in 2013 for the sequel, Grown Ups 2. In his touching tribute to Farley, Sandler notes that had he lived, he’d be readying now for a Grown Ups 3.

Other highlights of the episode included a Sanders Family Reunion skit, where we learn where the comedian got the inspiration for some of his characters, as well as a sketch about Romano Tours to Italy, which I thought was not only funny, but highly informative.
