HBO Max

We always knew that WarnerMedia would be entering the streaming wars just like their entertainment rivals Disney and NBCUniversal. It was only a matter of time before we knew what kind of titles their service would include.

And now we know. Not only that, but the streaming service has a new name as well: HBO Max. More on the report below.

Variety confirms that WarnerMedia will be launching HBO Max in the spring of 2020. It will include over 10,000 hours of content from their library of films and television shows. One of the biggest things to come out of this is that Friends will be leaving Netflix, with exclusive streaming rights to all 236 episodes of the show heading to HBO Max next year.

HBO Max will also have exclusive streaming rights to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Pretty Little Liars.

The launch also sees exclusive movie production deals with Greg Berlanti and Reese Witherspoon. Berlanti will produce an initial four movies focused in the young adult space, while Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine will produce at least two films.

Berlanti is best known for carving out a successful superhero space on the CW with shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Witherspoon really needs no introduction as she has found her success both on screen and off.

Of course, there is also the original content. Some of the original series coming to HBO Max include:

  • Dune The Sisterhood: an adaptation of Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson’s book based in the world created by Frank Herbert’s book Dune, from director Denis Villeneuve.
  • Tokyo Vice: based on Jake Adelstein’s nonfiction account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat starring Ansel Elgort.
  • The Flight Attendant: a one-hour thriller series based on the novel by Chris Bohjalian, which will star Kaley Cuoco, who is also executive producing alongside Greg Berlanti.
  • Love Life: a 10-episode half-hour romantic comedy anthology starring Pitch Perfect star Anna Kendrick, who will also executive produce alongside Paul Feig, produced by Lionsgate.
  • Station Eleven: a post-apocalyptic limited series based on Emily St. John Mandel’s bestseller, adapted by Patrick Somerville and directed by Hiro Murai.
  • Made for Love: a 10-episode, half-hour, straight-to-series adaptation based on the tragicomic novel of the same name by Alissa Nutting, also from Somerville and directed by S.J. Clarkson.
  • Gremlins: an animated series from Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Entertainment based on the original movie.

But those are just a few of the things you can expect to see on the HBO Max when it does launch next year.

In order to offer those 10,000 hours of content to its subscribers, the streaming service will include titles from HBO, Warner Bros., New Line, DC Entertainment, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, Looney Tunes, and more.
