SDCC 2019: ‘His Dark Materials’ Trailer: HBO’s Latest May Fill Fantasy Void

His Dark Materials

It would be hard for any television series to follow up something as grand and epic as Game Of Thrones. Near impossible. But HBO is going to try hard to make that happen with theirs and BBC’s adaptation of His Dark Materials. It won’t be easy, but it will at least fill that void left behind by Game of Thrones until its prequel arrives.

And now we are getting an extended look from the upcoming show that will hit TV screens later this Fall, courtesy of a brand new trailer that debuted today at the San Diego Comic-Con. Check out the latest trailer for the show here below.

From the trailer, we get a much better sense of the plot and story at hand, and how massive this world is. Especially when it is filled with powerful compasses, attack monkeys, dirigibles, and armored bears. Oh, and Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda are there too.

This wouldn’t be the first time Philip Pullman’s fantasy was adapted. In 2007, director Chris Weitz adapted the first book of the His Dark Materials trilogy, The Golden Compass, for the big screen with stars Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Eva Green, and Ian McKellen. Unfortunately, a low box office gross and mixed reviews would prevent the filmmakers from closing out the trilogy. So it looks like HBO will be taking a different approach by taking Pullman’s novels to the small screen.

The show features Lyra (Keen), an orphan living with the teachers at Jordan College, Oxford, who uncovers a secret that is shared between Lord Asriel (McAvoy) and Mrs. Marisa Coulter (Wilson). She embarks on a search for her missing friends that leads to a conspiracy of missing children that are being taken to the North, an area where no child belongs, filled with a mysterious substance called Dust.

I have to say that this looks like something I would want to watch. Of course, this is just a trailer. But honestly, I think a world where animal companions are the physical manifestation of a person’s soul sounds pretty awesome. Not only that, but there are dirigibles, bomber jackets, castles, high-rise buildings, armored bears, and high fashion. I just want to go there.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

His Dark Materials stars Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Adapting Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which is considered a modern masterpiece of imaginative fiction, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living?””?and the dead?””?in their hands.

His Dark Materials premieres on HBO later this fall.
