Not too long ago, it was reported that Disney was interested in rebooting their witchy cult classic Hocus Pocus without the original cast. While the news that the film would be coming back was great for fans, it was upsetting to know that the original cast would not be back. However, that has now been dispelled. At least somewhat.
There are new reports that say Disney is developing Hocus Pocus 2 for Disney+, their exclusively streaming service. Additionally, they are trying to bring back the original witch trio played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. More on the report below.
Collider, who broke the exclusive news, says that Disney has hired Workaholics writers and co-producer Jen D’Angelo to pen the script. Sources tell the site that D’Angelo will also been tasked with finding a way to bring back the original cast of Midler as Winifred, Parker as Sarah, and Najimy as Mary. It’s not exactly clear if the three will come back or if the original human protagonists — Omri Katz as Max Dennison, Thora Birch as Dani Dennison, Vinessa Shaw as Allison Watts — will return as well.
Hopefully, D’Angelo does find a way to bring the trio back, as it was they who were able to make the original Hocus Pocus the film that it is today. And if they do return, it will be interesting to see how D’Angelo will bring them back.
Again, when the reboot was announced, it was without the cast. The Royals writer Scarlett Lacey was brought in to pen that screenplay with the film’s original movie producer David Kirschner, who was brought in to executive produce. However, it looks like plans have changed.
Released back in 1993, Hocus Pocus wasn’t a box office smash, but it has since become a phenomenon and has gathered a huge following. Directed by Kenny Ortega, the film centered on a group of children who accidentally revive a trio of dead witches who plan to unleash a curse upon a small town.
We’ll keep you posted on Hocus Pocus 2 as the news comes in. Disney+ is set to launch on November 12, 2019.
