The Screen Actors Guild Awards (or SAG) recognizes the best performances in both film an television. It is often seen as a predictor of who will be nominated for the top acting honors for the Oscars and Emmys, with actors and actresses voting on who wins these awards.

It comes as no surprise that Rami Malek and Christian Bale have earned themselves honors for their performances in Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice, respectively. Emily Blunt and Lady Gaga are also being recognized with nominations for their performances in Mary Poppins Returns and A Star Is Born. Blunt also earned a supporting nod for her performance in A Quiet Place. Some of the more popular films like Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther didn’t get as many individual noms, but their collective efforts are being recognized for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

As for the TV side of things, Atlanta, Barry, GLOW, The Kominsky Method, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have earned nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, while The Americans, Better Call Saul, This Is Us and Ozark took home nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. The fallout of Kevin Hart‘s recent departure from being the host of the 2019 Academy Awards continues to unravel. With the Academy unable to find a replacement, there are reports that the ceremony may not even have a host. More on that, below.

As we get closer to the end of the year, more and more critic groups and guilds are releasing the nominees for the best of the year. Not all winners will be the same and that is what makes all of these guilds so special. As a member of the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, I took part in voting for the very best in film and filmmaking. This year, top honors went to A Star Is Born, with the Best Male Director going to Spike Lee for his work on BlackKklansman, and Lynne Ramsey winning Best Female Director for her work on You Were Never Really Here.

Additionally, Alfonso Cuaron won awards for Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography and Fox Searchlight’s The Favourite Best Comedy and Best Cast. Mission: Impossible – Fallout also took home two awards for Best Action Film and Best Stunts. While Disney and Marvel’s Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War won awards for Best Blockbuster, and Best Visual Effects and Best Visual Effects or Animated Performance. Kevin Hart is stepping down as the host of next year’s Academy Awards less than 24 hours after he was confirmed to host it. The comedian made the decision amid the resurfacing of years old controversial tweets in which he used homophobic and transphobic slurs. More on the report below.

Hosting an awards show like the Oscars is not as glamorous as it used to be. With ratings continuing to decrease, it’s nearly impossible to find someone who wants to take on the gig. Even when they do manage to find someone, how well (or poorly) the show is received may very well be on them.
