With the buzz surrounding Metallica‘s upcoming movie, Through The Never, I thought I’d take a glance back at the band during a major turning point in their career that would see them go from heroes of the Thrash Metal scene, to a worldwide phenomenon. The Black Album became Metallica’s springboard to international recognition, propelling into the mainstream, an accomplishment that still largely divides fans to this day. Prior to 1991, Metallica’s reputation was legendary among metalheads following underground movements. During the Eighties, as far as MTV was concerned, Heavy Metal was all glam and hair; with bands such as Ratt and Poison taking a front seat in the mayhem mainstream. But elsewhere, metalheads knew there was far more to the rapidly growing genre, and that there was more variety in the scene that involved less hairspray and less lipstick.

The Incredible Melting Man
Blu-ray | Amazon Instant Prime Video
Director: William Sachs
Screenwriter: William Sachs
Cast: Alex Rebar, Burr DeBenning, Myron Healey, Rainbeaux Smith, Ann Sweeny
Scream! Factory
Rated R | 84 Minutes
Release Date: July 30, 2013 Written and directed by William Sachs (Galaxina), 1977’s The Incredible Melting Man stars Alex Rebar as astronaut Steve West, sole survivor of a fateful expedition to Saturn. After he is exposed to an intense blast of radiation in space, West is shown unconscious in a hospital back on Earth, with bandages covering his face. His physician, Dr. Loring (Lisle Wilson), cannot explain what is happening to West or how he survived. After the doctor leaves, West awakens and is horrified to find the flesh on his face and hands melting away. Hysterical, he attacks a corpulent nurse (Bonnie Inch) – one of the film’s more hilarious, unbelievable sequences in which the overweight nurse runs screaming (in slow motion) straight through a plate glass door. After killing the nurse, the crazed West escapes the hospital in typical “Monster on the Loose!” fashion.

| Horror Cult Classics ‘Nightbreed’ and ‘The Wicker Man’ Getting Restored Blu-ray Releases
This past weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con unleashed the usual torrential downpour of geek-pleasuring news stories such as this and obviously this. But as far as I’m concerned the biggest news coming out of the Con was the announcement that Shout! Factory was planning on releasing several beloved action and horror movies on DVD and Blu-ray later this year and early in 2014 through their Scream Factory label. Among their slate of upcoming titles are John Carpenter’s inner city siege story Assault on Precinct 13, the 1982 remake of Cat People directed by Taxi Driver/Rolling Thunder writer Paul Schrader, and Sam Raimi’s outrageous pre-Spider Man superhero adventure Darkman featuring Liam Neeson kicking major butt almost two decades before he played that guy whose daughter was…you know…Taken.

HBO
RELEASE DATE: June 11, 2013 With shows like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and True Blood leading the charge, it’s clear that HBO’s hit shows can often have a hefty budget and rely heavily on visual effects and costumes and so on. One of their newer series, The Newsroom, is not one of those shows. Created by Aaron Sorkin, the show is simple enough on the surface—being about the inner workings of a news team—but a collection of lives intertwined within this newsroom setting leads to plenty of interesting storylines as the show progresses. Instead of the aforementioned effects and costumes, it instead relies on two key things: writing and acting, and nails both of them consistently.
