Mulan

Last week we learned that there were two studios involved in dueling live-action Mulan projects. One is from Disney, while the other is from Sony. Both promised that their films would prominently feature an Asian cast and have an Asian filmmaker in the director’s chair.

Disney had their hopes set on Ang Lee directing their project, but the director passed. Interestingly enough, it was thought that Sony would give their live-action Mulan to Lee, considering that they are distributing his latest directorial effort, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. But it looks like that isn’t happening either as Sony has tapped Game of Thrones director Alex Graves to make their live-action Mulan. More on the story below.

With shows like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and True Blood leading the charge, it’s clear that HBO’s hit shows can often have a hefty budget and rely heavily on visual effects and costumes and so on. One of their newer series, The Newsroom, is not one of those shows.

Created by Aaron Sorkin, the show is simple enough on the surface—being about the inner workings of a news team—but a collection of lives intertwined within this newsroom setting leads to plenty of interesting storylines as the show progresses. Instead of the aforementioned effects and costumes, it instead relies on two key things: writing and acting, and nails both of them consistently.

While we often think of fire as a heat source or a weapon, more often than not, fire illuminates our path and helps shows us what’s true. After weeks of epic television, Game of Thrones‘ fifth episode, “Kissed by Fire,” allows most of characters to look at the paths they’ve chosen before deciding (or having someone choose for them) their new fate.

Jamie’s life has certainly turned out much different than I believe he originally intended. In the episode’s strongest scene, Jamie (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) explains to Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) the ‘secret origin’ of the Kingslayer name, detailing the mad king’s obsession with wildfire and how he planned to burn the city down, men, women, and children all. So, Jamie took matters into his own hands. This is battered and beaten Jamie Lannister, far different from the attempted child-killer we saw in the first season. We know that version of Jamie still lurks below, but the journey and evolution of the character is very different now than before.
