The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence
Netflix Streaming
DVD | Blu-Ray
Written and Directed by Tom Six
Starring Laurence R. Harvey, Ashlynn Yennie, Maddi Black
IFC Midnight
Originally Released: September 22, 2011
Are we really not only making movies about eating shit, but making sequels to them now? The Human Centipede 2 is not only a difficult film to watch; it’s disgusting and it’s messy. Where the first movie is cold, deliberate, clinical, and in full color; the sequel is static, filthy, filmed in black-and-white, and firmly lacking in the antiseptic of the first (quite literally). As with the initial movie, there’s not much about this horror movie to ‘scare’ you, but much of it to shock and disgust you. Tom Six delivers his promise that this sequel makes the original look like My Little Pony; but there is a cost to this, as elements of social commentary and deeper symbolism is sacrificed by the obsession of being able disturb you and shock you.

Throw up the metal horns and pay attention to your online streaming screen, people, because this week’s Netflix review comes from Norway, the home of Vikings, pioneering Black Metal, and… TROLLS! The much discussed and highly reviewed film Trollhunter takes you into the domain of modernized fantasy, bringing the creatures from fairy tales and folklore into a modern setting, and providing them with a film platform in the manner that vampires and zombies have had for years. The principal selling factor of Trollhunter is its breathtaking visual effects, making it an amazing eye-candy experience. Presented in “found-footage” format, Trollhunter shadows a group of film students creating a documentary examining mysterious bear deaths across the country. Their investigations lead them to a man known only as Hans, who turns out to be a long-time experienced trollhunter employed by a government who wants to keep the existence of trolls a secret.

While branded as an animated family movie, Rango is truly a thrilling Western and hysterical comedy all built into one. The animation is remarkable in its coupling with some memorable voice acting, supported by a solid script and iconic scenes. Rango is a film that must not be missed. The movie tells the story of our title character, who begins as a household family pet with gigantic dreams of becoming the most revered and versatile actor of all time. A chance accident finds him lost and alone on a desert highway, from where he finds his way to the City Of Dirt. The plot then morphs into a Western motif at this point, where Rango discovers he may be able to play the role of a lifetime in this new city.

With the recent memes following the “zombie attack” news report from Florida, I found myself in a bit of a zombie flick mood this week for the Netflix Review. I was discussing this with a good friend of mine after reading the “bite your face off” news, and he recommended Aaah! Zombies!! to me because the story is told from the perspective of the zombies themselves. Fascinated by this hysterical premise, I decided to dive into it. And what an eccentric ride this movie is. Branded as a horror comedy, Aaah! Zombies!! dispenses exactly what it proposes: a zombie flick from the perspective of the zombies. The movie, directed by Matthew Kohnen, plays up on the well-known and thoroughly grounded trends and stereotypes from zombie tradition. Aaah! Zombies!!, originally released under the name of Wasting Away, follows the ordeals of four teens that becoming exposed to a toxic waste that turn them into zombies. Accompanied by a man who claims to be Black Ops, the group is immune to injuries and imperceptive of their bodily transformation. They think they are victims of a military experiment that have turned them into super soldiers.

Several weeks ago, I reviewed the first couple of seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation for our Netflix Review feature here at Geeks Of Doom. I had an enjoyable time delving into some nostalgia that I decided to take a step back further and dive into the original series of Star Trek, complete with the remastering and updated visual effects throughout all three seasons, encompassing the good (classic memorable episodes), the bad (Spock’s Brain and Season Three), and the Ugly (Space Hippies). Commencing in 1966, Gene Roddenberry‘s creation would eventually become a franchise revered and followed by millions of fans worldwide. Despite this, the history of the original series would become affected by budgetary constraints and poor ratings in archaic scales, limiting the primary voyages of the USS Enterprise to three seasons only. As is prevalently known, Star Trek follows the voyages of the Enterprise, on its peaceful mission of exploration into unknown areas of the galaxy – attempting to meet and contact new civilizations, and represent the interests of the Federation. Lead by Captain Kirk (William Shatner), and accompanied by First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley) among many others, the team aboard the starship would become known in-universe as legendary historical figures trailblazing their way into the unknown – and create such an element of veneration associated with the ship that the name Enterprise would be assigned to the Federation’s future flag ships.
