The Mist
Episode 1.1 “Pilot”
Created & Written by Christian Torpe
Directed by Adam Bernstein
Starring Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Danica Curcic, Okezie Morro, Luke Cosgrove, Darren Pettie, Russell Posner, Dan Butler, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Frances Conroy
Network: Spike TV
Air date: June 22, 2017 In 2007, Frank Darabont brought Stephen King‘s novella The Mist to the big screen and created one of the most jaw-dropping horror films in memory. The story was simple enough: a mysterious mist engulfs a small Maine town. The townfolk flock to a supermarket as monsters begin devouring those left outside. The monsters from the mist end up producing monsters inside as the people quickly turn to fanaticism and violence on each other. The film’s ending is one of legends. I won’t spoil it, but those in my theater were left speechless and motionless throughout the entire credits. A decade later, Danish writer/director Christian Torpe brings the King work to the small screen for a ten-episode run on Spike TV. The Mist is the first of three major adaptations of King’s work coming this year with The Dark Tower due out in theaters in August and the remake of It in September.

Air Date: Wednesday, June 21st, 2017, 10pm SyFy’s latest series Blood Drive is the lovechild of James Roland, a tearful ode to grindhouse exploitation cinema of the 70s and 80s. Last week on the series premiere, we were dropped head first into the rotating gears of a dystopian future after a huge fracking earthquake rips the US apart, resulting in a world where gas is obscenely expensive, and cars run on blood. There is an evil all-powerful corporation, Heart Enterprises, and when two cops stumble onto Julian Slink (Colin Cunningham) and his Blood Drive death race, things do not end up well for them. Arthur is thrown into the race, while Christopher ends up knee deep in robot clones. Spoilers below.

AMC
Air date: Sunday, June 25th, 2017, 9pm Finally! Preacher returns to AMC for Season 2 and Preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) are, as the title suggest, “on the road.” Last season, Jesse was possessed by Genesis, an all powerful half-godly/half-demonic force. It’s so powerful that angels from Heaven came looking for him and it, and they’re hilariously unsuccessful at retrieving it. Jesse feeling revitalized by the power of Genesis tries to save his small Texas town of Annville and bring them the voice of God himself, except for one problem: God is missing. Annville finds this out full force when a methane gas explosion wipes out everyone in the town except for three who happen to be eating at a roadside diner on the outskirt of town”¦ you guessed who. The search for God begins”¦ NOW.

Syfy
Air Date: Wednesday, June 14th, 2017, 10pm Midnight Grindhouse debuted Blood Drive Wednesday night on Syfy. With a story straight out of a cheap schlocky drive thru double feature, and promising splatter effects akin to Peter Jackson’s early filmography, James Roland’s Blood Drive offered something wholly different from what you’re used to in mid-week cable dramas. Cars with engines that devour human beings, heroes that curse, and all sorts of horror-themed “grindhouse” characters… Blood Drive has it all. The previews promised all sorts of “grindhouse” inspired baddies like cults, cannibals, monsters, and all the raunch you can throw in. Plot and acting are not what is important here. This show proudly attempts to be as in your face and graphically visceral as possible. I’m genuinely excited to see not if the show crosses the line, but how far past the line the show can go. Spoilers below.
