The Simpsons Star Wars Lightsabers

This past weekend saw the release of a few new movies, including new entries in the Star Wars—which you’ve no doubt been hearing about and seeing constantly for the past week or so, especially if you’re a regular Geeks of Doom visitor—and Alvin and the Chipmunks franchises. The two movies ended up finishing first and second at the domestic box office for the weekend, though it was nowhere near close with The Force Awakens taking in a massive $248 million and breaking lots of records while The Road Chip took in only $14 million.

Not everyone was shocked to see these two movies arriving in theaters this past weekend, however. In a somewhat prophetic episode of The Simpsons way back in 2009 titled “Homer the Whopper,” a movie studio lot is shown with ads for, you guessed it, new Star Wars and Alvin and the Chipmunks movies. The Smurfs

We’ve all come to terms with the fact that any old cartoons we grew up with and love will eventually receive an updated CGI makeover and a run on the Silver Screen. So many have already been through this process — Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield, and Marmaduke, to name a few — and none have been very well-accepted…so far.

Another of these CGI re-inventions is of everyone’s favorite little blue creatures: The Smurfs, and while it is very grainy and black and white, UGO has gotten their hands on the first peek of what our dearest Smurfs will look like in computerized form. I personally did not see it when it happened, but apparently a posted leaked a while back for the movie, and that had a Smurf on it as well, but the two look nothing alike.

Continue on to the bottom of the post to check out this first image of what we can expect to see in The Smurfs.

Marmaduke

Not too long ago, we discovered that the long-running comic strip Marmaduke was one of many old comics, toys, and other similar titles being turned into feature films. Apparently they were already hard at work on the film, as we now have a brand new teaser trailer for the flick to watch…if you so dare.

Fans of the comic strip and kids alike may find themselves enjoying a film like this much like with Alvin and the Chipmunks and their new sequel Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. For me personally — and most of our readers, I assume — this isn’t going to be at the tippy-top of your movie viewing wish list for 2010. The teaser trailer is short and consists of a little voice over action from the giant dog we know as Marmaduke (Owen Wilson), as well as a transition from Phantom Planet’s “California” to 2Pac and Dr. Dre’s “California Love,” if you’re into that sorta madness.

Head on over to the other side to check out the trailer.

Yogi

In yet another announcement regarding a classic cartoon character, it appears as though there is a Yogi Bear movie in the works, and it’s actually set to begin filming next month. Naturally, this will be another hybrid movie that will mix live-action humans with the former cartoons getting their CGI makeover.

This comes from an Entertainment Weekly report stating that there are three big names currently in negotiations to take the lead roles in the movie: Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake, and Anna Faris. If these talks all work out in the end, Aykroyd would voice the picnic-addicted bear Yogi; Timberlake would take on his tiny little buddy Boo-Boo, and Faris would be playing a nature documentary film maker named Rachel that chooses the bears as her latest project.
