Frozen producer Peter Del Vecho confirmed to TV Guide in anticipation of the ABC special The Story of ‘Frozen’: Making a Disney Animated Classic airing Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 8pm ET, that the Broadway production heavily hinted (and blatantly stated at some points) earlier this year is now in development. Still in the very early stages, Del Vecho will include directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee on the project.

Disney’s Frozen tells the story of Anna (Kristen Bell), who sets off to find her sister Elsa (Idina Menzel), with trusty sidekicks snowman Olaf (Josh Gad), iceman Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and reindeer Sven. Elsa had unknowingly set off an unending winter in Arendelle, their hometown, when a fight with Anna caused her powers to flare and scared her into running away to live in isolation. Anna wants her sister back and the kingdom thawed and saved.

Few could have anticipated that a 1992 film flop would later inspire a hit Broadway show, energizing the Nederlander Theatre for more than two years. Newsies, once believed to collect dust in home entertainment cabinets, became a huge cult classic and compelled Disney to translate the musical into a Broadway spectacular. Now, sadly, the “King of New York” will say goodbye to the Great White Way, as the Broadway production of Newsies closes on August 24.

But before we say farewell to Jack, Crutchie, Katherine, Davey, and Mr. Pulitzer, let’s take a step back into memory lane and recall the best of Newsies on Broadway.

A southpaw underdog wants to make it as a big time fighter, but he just can’t catch a break. He gets kicked out of his locker at the local gym, run by Mickey. He’s just a little too soft for his job as a loan shark’s muscle (won’t break bones). And the girl he’s crushing on won’t give him the time of day. That is, until Apollo Creed unexpectedly needs a new opponent when his original opponent for the world heavyweight title drops out because of an injury.

Ever the businessman, he wants to fight one of Philly’s own, a nobody that gets a shot at the title. He chooses “The Italian Stallion,” Rocky Balboa. Rocky wins over shy pet shop girl Adrian with a little help from her brother Paulie, gains Mickey as a trainer, has a training montage complete with running up those famous steps, and wows everyone in the climactic fight.
