Universal Classic Monsters

Universal has decided to put together their very own version of the Pixar Brain Trust to work together on the planned Avengers-style shared universe reboot of their Classic Monsters.

It’s being reported that the studio has brought in Ed Solomon, Noah Hawley, and Aaron Guzikowski as part of the strategy. The trio now will join forces with the first two members of the cinematic collective, Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.

The Mummy 1932

Recently it was announced that Universal was going to reboot their Classic Monsters, and also bring them together similarly to what Marvel did with their superheros in The Avengers.

The ambitious plan is being developed by writers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, but now it appears at least one of the two wants to get a little more hands-on. It’s being reported that Kurtzman is in final negotiations to direct the first of the rebooted monster flicks, The Mummy, himself.

Conan the Barbarian

Every year, the Cannes Film Festival screens the latest features from some of the world’s most prestigious directors amidst a sea of glitz and glamor, and by a jury of celebrated filmmakers and artisans select titles are handed awards for various achievements their financiers and distributors will make great use of when they begin to mount the inevitable Oscar campaigns several months later.

Cannes is also the place where producers and filmmakers come to peddle their latest movies and raise funds for future projects with little more than hastily-assembled posters and trailers to show potential investors. The posters that emerge from every Cannes Film Festival are some of the craziest, retina-scouring images a human being could ever gaze upon. But on occasion you might find something amazing hiding among the dreck, such as this sales poster for the long-in-gestation The Legend of Conan.

You can check it out here below.

Fast & Furious

Some what of an inevitability considering the precarious situation that Universal Pictures is in now. On one hand, the studio can scrap the entire film and have screenwriter Chris Morgan rewrite the Fast & Furious 7 script since Paul Walker tragically died in an accident last week. On the other hand, the studio could have Morgan revise it to give Walker’s Brian O’Connor character the proper send off, giving us one more chance to see the actor in one of his final performances – which is what fans want.

But the one thing on Universal’s mind is how they can approach this film and honor the memory of Walker. Universal does seem content on salvaging whatever footage can be used, since the film was nearly complete before the actor’s untimely death, and if they are satisfied with Morgan’s results, they can resume production as early as January. But that is a big if.

47 Ronin

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for their long-awaited epic period fantasy 47 Ronin. You can check it out here below.

Keanu Reeves plays a half-breed outcast selected to join a group of ronin (guess how many there are) in the battle against the evil Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano, Thor), the man responsible for killing their master. On their journey of vengeance, they engage in well-choreographed skirmishes and encounter all manner of CGI monstrosities. The predominantly Asian cast includes Japanese actors Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai) and Pacific Rim‘s Rinko Kikuchi as well as recognizable Japanese-American character player Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat). Chris Morgan (the Fast and the Furious movies), and Hossein Amini (Drive) collaborated on the screenplay.
