James Earl Jones Talks Darth Vader, Who Was First Chosen For The Voice & Low Payday

One of the most famous — if not THE most famous — voice actors on the planet, James Earl Jones, was a guest on the Live! With Regis and Kelly show recently.

The actor talks about how he got started in the business, and about his new gig playing the Morgan Freeman role in a stage adaptation of Driving Miss Daisy with Vanessa Redgrave, but also talks about his work as the iconic voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars trilogy.

Earl Jones touches on how they decided that the man in the suit, David Prowse, didn’t have quite the voice they were looking for, and how at first they were looking at Orson Welles for the job, but ultimately decided that he was just a bit too recognizable. Enter an offer to Earl Jones to do it, and it’s all history from there. He also talks about how chose not to be credited because he felt he didn’t need to be, and how he chose not to take the “points” that eventually made others involved in the movies millionaires thanks to residual payments. He was broke at the time, so he took just $7,000, went and bought groceries, and that was that.

Be sure to click on over to the dark side to see James Earl Jones talking Vader on Regis and Kelly, especially to see him tell Regis that he is his father.

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon*Con 2010 banner

Try explaining midichlorians to someone unfamiliar with the Star Wars films and it may come off sounding like a sexually transmitted disease.

Building upon that logic, the folks who produce Dragon*Con TV decided to make an interstellar PSA for Jedi who want to live a normal life despite their “condition.” While there is apparently no cure for “Midichlorians,” prescription drugs do exist that can reduce the number of Dark Side flare-ups and curb symptoms.

According to the video, embedded here below, the prescription drug Vaderex can help.

“The first time he had a Dark Side flare-up, he only slew a few sand people. But then he moved on to killing younglings. And when he tried to murder his best friend, I knew he needed help. That’s when we found Vaderex.”

Darth Vader Actor David Prowse Gets Cut Off By ‘Star Wars’ Creator George Lucas

There’s no denying that Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains in cinematic history. One thing that most should know bust some might not is that the dark Sith lord was brought to us by two different actors with James Earl Jones delivering the iconic voice we know so well, and the lesser-known David Prowse handling the costumed physical appearance.

Though most recognize Earl Jones as Vader, Prowse is certainly a beloved member of the Star Wars universe…at least when it comes to the fans anyway. When it comes to creator George Lucas and anything Lucasfilm related, however, things are not all sunshine and rainbows as you might assume.

Watch Now: Opening ‘Star Wars’ Scene Recreated On The Subway

There’s not a whole lot that needs to be explained here and not many details known as to how all of this came together, but it’s really entertaining to watch.

Basically, a group of folks decided to go all-out in recreating one of the opening scenes from Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. They even went as far as picking up a sweet set of replica costumes to really sell the show. But the real catch is that they performed the short scene on the subway — with new characters getting on at consecutive stops — surrounded by unsuspecting and eventually entertained people.

Geek Find: ‘Star Wars’ Portraits By Greg Peltz

Empress Eve   |  @   |

I’ve spent the majority of the holiday today watching Spike TV’s marathon of all six Star Wars movies, so I have Star Wars on the brain. (I know, I know, why am I watching these movies on TV with commercials — especially since the original trilogy is the Special Editions — when I own the DVDs? It makes no real sense, I understand, but it’s just one of those things — if it’s on TV, I’m compelled to watch).

Anyhow, it reminded me that a week or so ago I saw a bunch of really cool Star Wars character portraits by artist Greg Peltz that I wanted to share with you all. There’s Victorian-era steampunk versions of Boba Fett, C-3PO, and Chewbacca, as well as Civil War-era Darth Vader. Peltz also put up a new Civil War-style portrait yesterday of Luke and Leia called ‘Siblings’.

See all five images here below and be sure to check out Peltz’s blog for more of his work.
