It is official now: William Shatner is an Honorary Headbanger. As we brought to your attention several weeks ago, Captain Kirk himself had been nominated to receive the Honorary Headbanger Award at the annual Revolver Awards. Shatner received his award during the ceremony, and photos of the event are now available for you to check out at the bottom of this post. Scott Ian from Anthrax and comedian Brian Posehn presented the award to Shatner, which is handed out to someone who is not necessarily seen as being in the metal community, but embodies the spirit of metal. The award is a timely one for Shatner, who is currently working on a new music project: his first-ever metal album.

Spock may not think the merging of Shatner and Metal to be a logical one — but at this point in 2011, William Shatner is becoming more metal than ever. And even at his age of 80, there seems to be no stopping the once Captain of the USS Enterprise, for this year he will be releasing a metal album, as we reported on several weeks ago. To acknowledge his efforts not only towards his current album project, entitled Seeking Major Tom, but also for his entire epic career, William Shatner will next month be awarded the Honorary Headbanger Award at the annual Revolver Awards. The Revolver Golden Gods is an awards ceremony to recognize all metal, held every year. The Honorary Headbanger Award is handed out to someone who is not necessarily seen as being in the metal community, but embodies the spirit of metal. With his upcoming album featuring collaborative efforts with numerous metal artists, and his long career in Star Trek and acting in other roles over the years, Shatner is an artist of determination who continually breaks down the doors of what people think he should do (or if people just think it to be… odd).

William Shatner is working on another music project, and this time it’s all about metal. Following a “space” theme, and titled Seeking Major Tom, Shatner is joining forces with some major hard rock icons for the new project, which is set to be released later this year. Essentially, the release is a covers album, but with covers brought together to tell the story of a concept album. So far, Shatner has collaborated with Brian May (Queen), Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society), Peter Frampton, Ian Paice (Deep Purple), and Steve Howe (Yes). Seeking Major Tom is said to be a collection of 18 “rock anthems” reinterpreted to tell the story that Shatner is putting forward on the album.

| RIP Steve Prestwich: Drummer For Aussie Rock Legends ‘Cold Chisel’ Has Died |

Steve Prestwich, who was the drummer for Aussie rock legends Cold Chisel, has passed away at the age of 56. He was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, but was unable to regain consciousness following surgery.
Prestwich, originally born in England, moved to Australia in the 1970s and eventually joined forces with Jimmy Barnes, Don Walker, and Ian Moss to form Cold Chisel. The band was a major influence on the hard rock scene in Australia (and indeed, on Aussie culture in general), and are often seen as one of many bands that helped bring Aussie rock to the world stage. Cold Chisel was formed in 1973, initially as an early metal group performing covers of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Using their metal and hard rock influences, the band evolved with their own original material – coming up with a sounds that many people identified with “Aussie Pub Rock” and songs that many find to be anthemic and synonymous to aspects of Australian culture.
