Sepultura 30th Anniversary Tour Poster

Brazilian metal legends Sepultura have announced a five-week North American tour to commemorate their 30th anniversary. The trek, which is being presented by the folks over at Metal Injection, begins on May 9th at the Las Vegas version of Rock In Rio before winding its way through most of the U.S. and parts of Canada, ending in Grand Junction, Colorado on June 14th.

Destruction and Arsis will provide direct support for the entire tour. The first half of the run features openers Boris The Blade and Micawber. The Last Ten Seconds of Life and Starkill will be taking over those duties for the second half. Be sure to check this one out, this is a lot of top shelf metal on one bill!

Sepultura Band Photo Max and Igor

With the anthemic call-to-arms opening track of their fifth album, 1993’s Chaos A.D., here is Sepultura.

Watch the official video for “Refuse/Resist” here below.

Hailing from Brazil and led by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, the band broke new ground and paved the way for many bands that would follow in their footsteps. AllMusic declared Chaos A.D. one of the best heavy metal albums of all time, calling it “a remarkable achievement not only in its concentrated power and originality, but also in the degree to which Sepultura eclipsed their idols in offering a vision of heavy metal’s future.” To me, the same could be said of each and every one of the first six albums that the band issued.

Guardians of the Galaxy dancing baby groot

Today, I did an early morning workout to the sounds of thrash metal band Sepultura. A few hours later, I get a message about “Groots Bloody Groots,” a parody of the Sepultura song “Roots Bloody Roots” as if sung by Groot from Guardians Of The Galaxy. If you know about Guardians, then you know what Groot always says — I am Groot!

You can check out the video here below for “Groots Bloody Groots,” which contains footage of Dancing Groot from the Guardians film along with excessive headbanging as well as the lyrics so you can sing along!

Sarcafago Band Photo

Hailing from Brazil, Sarcafago was one of the first wave of black metal bands. Led by original Sepultura singer Wagner “Antichrist” Lamounier, they were perhaps the first black metal band in the Americas. The band built on inspiration from early European black metal pioneers such as Venom and Bathory. Their debut album, INRI, is hailed as a defining moment in the genre. The cover art for the record helped to establish the visual aesthetics of the genre, including the use of corpse-paint, leather jackets, and bullet belts. The band existed from 1985-2000 and reunion rumors persist, though Lamounier remains adamant that the band is over for good.

From their second studio album, The Laws of Scourge (1991), here is “Screeches from the Silence.”

Igor and Max Cavalera

Max Cavalera is probably the hardest working guy in metal these days. Just this year, the former leader of Sepultura toured with his band, Soulfly, in support of their latest album Savages; released another absolutely stellar self-titled album with his supergroup, Killer Be Killed; published his autobiography, My Bloody Roots: From Sepultura to Soulfly and Beyond, and did a book tour to promote it; and, somehow, found the time to jam with Suicide Silence on the Sepultura classic “Roots” at this year’s Revolver Golden Gods Awards (video is here below!).

Now comes the announcement, through Blabbermouth, that one of Cavalera’s other bands, Cavalera Conspiracy, will be releasing their third album in October. The group reunites Max and his brother, Igor Cavalera. Both brothers were founding members of the ground-breaking Brazilian metal juggernaut, Sepultura. When Max left the band acrimoniously in 1997, Igor stayed behind as their drummer. This caused strained relations between the two until Igor also left Sepultura in 2007. Their reconciliation lead to the formation of Cavalera Conspiracy, which has produced two albums that mirror the brutality of their early work with Sepultura.
