Movie theater franchises have been adding more and more immersive theater experiences to their screenings: There’s the ever-popular IMAX (in its various forms), AMC has the Dolby Cinema, and Regal Cinemas has launched a few new options with ScreenX and 4DX. I spent the summer checking out cinema chain’s answers to slumping attendance, focusing mainly on what 4DX has to offer.

In honor of the 20th anniversary of The Matrix, the 1999 scifi-action film starring Keanu Reeves will be returning to select theaters for one week only later this month.

For this limited run, the Wachowski siblings-directed movie has been restored in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and will be screening exclusively at over 135 AMC Dolby Cinema theaters across the country starting August 30, 2019.

I got the chance to take in an advanced screening on Thursday night of Marvel’s new film Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, at a Dolby Cinema at the AMC Theatres in New York City. Before the movie began, representatives from Dolby gave a presentation demonstrating their Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technologies, and how their Dolby Total Cinema Experience compares to the standard theater-going experience. And I have to say, I was very impressed. Below are my thoughts on the Dolby Cinema experience and technologies, details from the demonstration, and then my two cents about Doctor Strange itself.
