The Wachowskis’ ‘Jupiter Ascending’ Delayed From This Summer Until Next February

Andy and Lana Wachowski‘s latest big-budget sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending initially looked to be one of this summer movie season’s oddest entries, but no more. For reasons that have yet to be made clear Warner Bros., which co-financed the $150 million tentpole blockbuster wannabe with Village Roadshow, has moved the film out of its original July 18, 2014 release date and rescheduled it for next February.
I can’t say that I’m surprised by this move. With no major stars and a storyline not based on any existing fictional properties Jupiter faced potential stiff competition on opening weekend from the likes of Planes: Fire and Rescue, The Purge: Anarchy, and Sex Tape, not to mention only getting two weeks to make its mark on audiences before Guardians of the Galaxy debuted.

‘Jupiter Ascending’ Trailer: Channing Tatum Protects Mila Kunis From Intergalactic Assassins

Warner Bros has released the first trailer for the Jupiter Ascending starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, and Eddie Redmayne. The film can be seen as a Cinderella in space kind of story, with Kunis playing the princess who’s working dead-end jobs on planet Earth being saved by Caine (Tatum), who tells her that her genetic markings puts her next in line for the galactic throne. Hit the jump to see the full trailer.
I’m not going to lie to you: For something that goes from planet Earth to Jupiter, the Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending‘s scope seems surprisingly small. But the detail that went into the visuals, now that is something that will definitely take your breath away. Something that really shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the directing team brought us films like The Matrix Trilogy, Speed Racer, and Cloud Atlas.

The Wachowskis Open Up About Filming ‘Cloud Atlas’

To avoid any confusion as to what the basic idea of what The Wachowski Siblings (Lana and Andy) and Tom Tykwer’s adaptation of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas might be, they released an extraordinarily long trailer – almost two and a half minutes longer than the average trailer. Still, a movie that has actors playing multiple characters in six multigenerational intersecting storylines may be a little difficult for the average audience member to grasp.
Now in a profiling interview with The New Yorker, the Wachowski Siblings are detailing the entire (the good and the bad) filmmaking process.

Ben Affleck NOT Directing ‘Justice League’; The Wachowskis Now Rumored For The Job
|
 |

Almost three weeks ago we reported that actor/filmmaker Ben Affleck was on Warner Bros.’ shortlist to direct their long-gestating Justice League movie that has picked up some serious heat in the wake of Marvel’s The Avengers banking over a billion dollars worldwide. Ever since refocusing his career on directing, Affleck has seen his stock in Tinseltown skyrocket and given that he has experience working with talented ensemble casts and staging intricate action sequences, it seemed that he would be a natural fit to bring the mightiest heroes in the DC Universe to the silver screen. It appears, sadly, that the proverbial gun was jumped like so many sharks on network television.
Affleck, whose latest film (as both actor and director) Argo opens next month and who had signed on to mount an ambitious adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel The Stand at Warner Bros. next, confirmed the truth behind those potentially exciting Justice League rumors in an exclusive interview with the Canadian website 24 Hours Vancouver.

‘Jupiter Ascending’ Plot Sounds A Bit Like A Cosmic Fairy Tale

Even with Speed Racer’s small cult following, The Wachowski’s last directorial effort proved to be a fruitless venture. But that didn’t stop Andy and Lana Wachowski from doing what they do best – making movies that stretch the imagination. I imagine that they will be recognized for just that when Cloud Atlas hits theaters this December.
Now since that film is in post-production, it’s time to see what’s happening with their forthcoming film Jupiter Ascending. Slowly but surely there are some things that are trickling out of the faucet and we are learning new things about the film.
We already know that Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum have claimed the lead roles in the film. But Vulture seems to have learned the plot of the Wachowski’s newest directorial effort.

How An Odd KISS Album Influenced ‘The Matrix’
|

November 16 marks the 30th anniversary of a bizarre album release by the band KISS. It was called Music From The Elder, and was initially confusing to the followers of the band. The album was based on a concept, a story focusing on The One who would be guided by a chap called Morpheus.
Wait a minute? Isn’t that the story of The Matrix?
Yes, it is. In fact, it is my contention that the Wachowski Brothers were influenced by the story behind KISS’ Music From The Elder — and contributed significantly to the character growth and plot of their saga.
It’s clear that the Wachowski’s were influenced by a vast number of elements in the creation of the franchise, such as William Gibson‘s Neuromancer, the Terminator series, the works of Philip K. Dick, and also Doctor Who. In point of fact, the concept of a Matrix was initially introduced in the Classic Doctor Who adventure The Deadly Assassin featuring Tom Baker, where the Doctor (like Neo) literally “plugs in” to a Matrix and finds himself in a virtual reality battling his enemies.
